Speaking to the\u00a0<em>Review<\/em>\u2019s Lidija Haas in early May, she expressed impatience with writers who want to break their readers\u2019 hearts: \u201cThere\u2019s an arrogance to that that has always bothered me. You leave my heart alone!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Writing that beguiles and devastates often appears to do so casually, with the smallest of phrases or gestures, and those moments were what caught at us as we put this issue together: a little girl, in a debut work of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/7882\/descent-harriet-clark?mc_cid=ed949617ba&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\"><strong>fiction<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0by Harriet Clark, patted down by her grandfather with a tailor\u2019s respectful discretion on their Saturday visits to her mother in prison; a phone call from a former lover, his voice as jarringly familiar as \u201cthe feeling of my tongue inside my mouth,\u201d in Robert Gl\u00fcck\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/miscellaneous\/7896\/about-ed-robert-gluck?mc_cid=ed949617ba&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\"><strong>About Ed<\/strong><\/a>\u201d; that gentle \u201cmm-kay\u201d in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/7883\/bob-ross-paints-your-portrait-terrance-hayes?mc_cid=ed949617ba&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\"><strong>poem<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0by Terrance Hayes written in the voice of Bob Ross.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Although the\u00a0<em>Review<\/em>\u00a0has generally resisted the lure of the themed issue\u2014the main criterion for what we publish is that it leave us in some way altered\u2014just occasionally, as if from the unconscious, the hint of\u00a0a theme emerges. This time, as press day approached, we noticed that several of the pieces we\u2019d chosen\u00a0conjured the experience of an intense crush\u2014the kind that takes you over with a fierce possessiveness, while its object remains oblivious. The fastidious, measured narrator of Esther Yi\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/7884\/moon-esther-yi?mc_cid=ed949617ba&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\"><strong>Moon<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d attending the concert of a K-pop band whose fans she\u2019s always looked down on, finds herself instantly undone. In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/art-photography\/7908\/posters-marc-hundley?mc_cid=ed949617ba&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\"><strong>portfolio<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0made especially for the\u00a0<em>Review<\/em>, the artist Marc Hundley captures the vertiginous sensations of reading alone, falling under the spell of certain lines from our own archives. And, in a short\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/letters-essays\/7905\/for-snow-queens-who-have-considered-suicide-because-paul-newman-in-the-first-twenty-minutes-of-paris-blues-is-too-much-darryl-pinckney?mc_cid=ed949617ba&amp;mc_eid=UNIQID\"><strong>essay<\/strong><\/a>, Darryl Pinckney describes the night when he was\u00a0alone in an upstairs bedroom as a child in Indianapolis and\u00a0the film\u00a0<em>Paris Blues<\/em>\u00a0\u201cswitched on a certain channel of my being.\u201d What channel, exactly?
