Ina Cari\u00f1o holds an MFA in creative writing from North Carolina State University. Their poetry appears in<\/em> Guernica, Diode, Poetry Northwest, Poetry Magazine, The Paris Review Daily, Waxwing, New England Review, and elsewhere. Cari\u00f1o is a Kundiman fellow and a recipient of a fellowship from the Vermont Studio Center. They are the winner of the 2021 Alice James Award for<\/em> Feast, forthcoming from Alice James Books in March 2023. In 2021, Cari\u00f1o was selected as one of four winners of the 92Y Discovery Poetry Contest. In 2019, they founded a reading series, Indigena Collective, centering marginalized creatives in the community.<\/em><\/p>\n

From Feast<\/em>:<\/p>\n

balsam pear. wrinkled gourd.
\nleafy thing raised from seed.<\/p>\n

pungent goya, ampalaya: cut
\n& salt at the sink. spoon pulp<\/p>\n

from bumpy rind, brown half-moons
\nin garlic & sparking mantika.<\/p>\n

like your nanay did. like your lola did.
\nlike your manang braving hot parsyak\u2014<\/p>\n

you\u2019ll wince. you\u2019ll think of the taste
\nof your own green body\u2014mapait<\/p>\n

ang lasa. your sneer. masakit, dugo\u2019t
\nlaman. it hurts, this smack of bitter.<\/p>\n

yes you\u2019ll remember how much it hurts,
\nto nick your thumb as you bloom heat<\/p>\n

in acid, sili at sukang puti\u2014to grow up
\nglowering in half-light\u2014to flesh out<\/p>\n

& plod through your own grassy way,
\nunfurl your own crush of vines.<\/p>\n

after you tip it onto a mound
\nof steamed rice, as you chew,<\/p>\n

the barb of it will hit the back
\nof your throat. look at yourself,<\/p>\n

square. you used to snarl at moths,
\nstart small blazes in entryways.<\/p>\n

woodchip fires, flaking paint.
\nlook, tingnan mo\u2014see your lip<\/p>\n

curling in the glint of your bowl.
\nunruly squash. acrid vegetable,<\/p>\n

you\u2019ll flinch. you\u2019ll want to see
\nnothing, taste like nothing. but<\/p>\n

when you disappear your meal\u2014
\nwhen you choke on the last<\/p>\n

chunky morsel of rice\u2014you\u2019ll slurp
\nthirsty for more\u2014a saccharine life.<\/p>\n
