The stories are wonderfully odd, and the book itself is a beautiful object. It includes color reproductions of the manuscripts\u2014often written on the backs of business cards\u2014as well as the deciphered German originals. Walter Benjamin\u2019s afterword praises Walser\u2019s \u201cartful clumsiness,\u201d and I would do the same for Susan Bernofsky\u2019s translation. \u2014<strong>Robyn Creswell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been stealing moments all week to read Katherine Larson\u2019s book of poems,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Radial-Symmetry-Yale-Younger-Poets\/dp\/0300169205\/\">Radial Symmetry<\/a>. <\/em>The\u00a0synthesis of experience and curiosity that Larson no doubt uses in her work as a field ecologist and research scientist is here applied to verse. The natural world has never felt more physical, more alive with tiny movements and infinite textures\u2014and so titillating, as when she writes, \u201cWe hear the cactus whisper \/\u00a0<em>pollinate me furry moth.<\/em>\u201d \u2014<strong>Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alexander Chee\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.themorningnews.org\/archives\/personal_essays\/annie_dillard_and_the_writing_life.php\">shared an old essay of his<\/a> on Twitter this morning about being a student of Annie Dillard\u2019s: \u201cYou could think that your voice as a writer would just emerge naturally, all on its own, with no help whatsoever, but you\u2019d be wrong. What I saw on the page was that the voice is in fact trapped, nervous, lazy. Even, and in my case, most especially, amnesiac. And that it had to be cut free.\u201d \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After seeing a spectacular production of the play on Broadway, I\u2019ve rediscovered Tom Stoppard\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcadiabroadway.com\/\">Arcadia<\/a><\/em>. It\u2019s a play about love, sex, transcendence (if there is any), and whatever it is that defines the human experience across time and space. But it also reminds us of the beauty and sustaining force of wonder; \u201cit\u2019s the wanting to know that makes us matter,\u201d because when all is said and done, \u201cwhen we have found all the meanings and lost all the mysteries, we will be alone, on an empty shore.\u201d \u2014<strong>Elianna Kan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Anthony Burgess\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Pianoplayers-Anthony-Burgess\/dp\/0685191788\/\">The Pianoplayers<\/a><\/em>, a retired prostitute tells the story of her father, a man who \u201ccalled himself not a pianist but a pianoplayer.\u201d (No space between <em>piano<\/em> and <em>player<\/em>\u2014that was how close he and the piano were.) The entirely fictional yet perfectly matter-of-fact recollection of a difficult father takes the narrative form of a memoir and turns it on its head. Given my absorption in Burgess\u2019s novel, it was an especially interesting week to experience <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Reading-My-Father-Alexandra-Styron\/dp\/1416591796\/\">Reading My Father<\/a><\/em>, Alexandra Styron\u2019s memoir of her father, the literary icon (and friend of <em>The Paris Review<\/em>) William Styron. \u2014<strong>Rosalind Parry <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignpolicy.com\/articles\/2011\/05\/04\/war_dog?page=0,0\">Military dogs jumping out of helicopters<\/a>. Sick. \u2014<strong>Natalie Jacoby<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve been poring over Robert Walser\u2019s\u00a0Microscripts, a selection from the cache of papers covered in demonically miniaturized handwriting he left at his death.
