The story was included in Kincaid\u2019s 1983 debut collection,\u00a0<em>At the Bottom of the River<\/em>, which drew from her early life in Antigua and marked her as a singular voice in American letters. Kincaid has gone on to publish five novels and five books of nonfiction\u2014she was a prolific\u00a0<em>New Yorker<\/em>\u00a0Talk of the Town columnist\u2014as well as many other stories.
