{"id":153428,"date":"2021-07-09T09:00:02","date_gmt":"2021-07-09T13:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/?p=153428"},"modified":"2021-07-09T10:07:21","modified_gmt":"2021-07-09T14:07:21","slug":"eileen-in-wonderland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2021\/07\/09\/eileen-in-wonderland\/","title":{"rendered":"Eileen in Wonderland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/archive\/items\/tga-9222-2-3-12\/agar-note-on-lewis-carroll-describing-him-as-a-prophet-of-surrealism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">undated note<\/a> bequeathed to the Tate Archive in 1992, Eileen Agar (1899\u20131991) writes of her admiration for the author of<\/em> Alice\u2019s Adventures in Wonderland<em>: \u201cLewis Carroll is a mysterious master of time<\/em><em> and imagination, the Herald of Sur-Realism and freedom, a prophet of the Future and an uprooter of the Past, with a literary and visual sense of the Present.\u201d The same could be said of Agar, whose long career as an artist spanned most of the twentieth century and intersected with some of the prevailing movements of the time, including Cubism and surrealism. Her timeless work\u2014including the oil painting <\/em>Alice with Lewis Carroll<em>\u2014will be on view through August 29 at t<\/em><em>he Whitechapel Gallery\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitechapelgallery.org\/exhibitions\/eileen-agar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eileen Agar: Angel of Anarchy<\/a>,\u201d the largest exhibition yet of the sui generis artist\u2019s oeuvre.
