Many of these writers\u2014John Ashbery, Mark Strand, Lucille Clifton, Ellen Bryant Voigt, Brigit Pegeen Kelly, Mary Jo Bang, and Solmaz Sharif, among many others\u2014have gone on to become leading voices in their generations.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s competition received close to a thousand submissions, which were read by preliminary judges Julia Guez and Timothy Donnelly. After much deliberating, final judges Rick Barot, Patricia Spears Jones, and M\u00f3nica de la Torre awarded this year\u2019s prizes to Kenzie Allen, Ina Cari\u00f1o, Mag Gabbert, and Alexandra Isles. The runners-up were Walter Ancarrow, Hannah Loeb, D\u0101shaun Washington, and JinJin Xu.<\/p>\n<p>The four winners receive five hundred dollars, publication on <em>The Paris Review Daily<\/em>, a stay at the Ace Hotel, and a reading at 92Y\u2019s Unterberg Poetry Center in the fall of 2021. She holds a Ph.D. in English and creative writing from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and an M.F.A. in poetry from the Helen Zell Writers\u2019 Program at the University of Michigan. Her poems can be found in <em>Boston Review<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Narrative Magazine<\/em>,\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Adroit Journal<\/em>. She is the recipient of fellowships from Vermont Studio Center and the Aspen Writers\u2019 Foundation. Born in West Texas, she currently lives and teaches in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quiet as Thunderbolts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And I kept it from you like a kill,<br \/>\nmy name, my legacy, my shoulder<br \/>\nchip and the small hollow beneath<\/p>\n<p>where I can be wounded. The Longhouse<br \/>\nI whittled to matchsticks, abalone<br \/>\nfilling up with hair ties, Ute painted<\/p>\n<p>coffee mugs and iron turtles a pan-flash<br \/>\nof identity, an almond eye watching<br \/>\nfrom between the white bookcases<\/p>\n<p>and photographs of cities, orchards,<br \/>\ngraves. A lonely ironing board<br \/>\nleft to the street outside our old place,<\/p>\n<p>candles I lit in Lisbon for all the women<br \/>\nI have loved. Animals who are no longer<br \/>\nwith us. Animals who are no longer<\/p>\n<p>ours. So much landscape I can\u2019t<br \/>\ntend to, wide as a child\u2019s face<br \/>\nand crumbled in drought,<\/p>\n<p>rimmed in salt. I kept the Water<br \/>\nLily, how Bear Clan was given<br \/>\nthe medicines, Namegiver,<\/p>\n<p>how she made me darker<br \/>\nwith her words. The turquoise ring<br \/>\nand how it pleases the Spirits<\/p>\n<p>to give that which has been<br \/>\nso admired. The sweetgrass<br \/>\nin my sock drawer, the exact volume<\/p>\n<p>of air I can fit in my lungs and belly<br \/>\nas I try to swallow and breathe<br \/>\nits sweetness. Every bead, every<\/p>\n<p>loop of every treasure necklace\u2014<br \/>\nI kept porcupine quills<br \/>\nin my throat, I let the water drown me<\/p>\n<p>every night in my river-bottom<br \/>\ncanoe. I\u2019ve been sleepwalking<br \/>\nsince I got to this earth,<\/p>\n<p>since they brought up the soil<br \/>\nand made an island, those who did not perish<br \/>\nin the dive. She teaches creative writing at Southern Methodist University and serves as the interviews editor for <em>Underblong Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tattoo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At forty-three my uncle got one of the ocean on his foot,<br \/>\nwhich made it look like he was standing in the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>But who could\u2019ve imagined, once he turned forty-four,<br \/>\nthat he\u2019d collapse right on its shore, his chest fallen flat<\/p>\n<p>as ink kept lapping against the bones attached to that<br \/>\nskin with its greenish-white tongues, its mouth full<\/p>\n<p>of foam. And his lips lined with sand. There\u2019s a little<br \/>\nblack compass I have inked on my hand, a mark people<\/p>\n<p>often mistake for a wedding band: a name promised,<br \/>\nan until-death wish, my path already set. This way<\/p>\n<p>I can think about permanence as I turn toward decay.<br \/>\nWhen other awful things happen, I hear an old friend<\/p>\n<p>say: <em>there will be an\/other side<\/em> again, and yet I can\u2019t<br \/>\nhelp but wonder if both sides are the same, just this one<\/p>\n<p>flipped image above and below any still water\u2019s surface<br \/>\n(notice the<em> face <\/em>in <em>surface<\/em>, a lake mirroring yours in it,<\/p>\n<p>how it echoes <em>ache, ache<\/em> before the eyes blue away).<br \/>\nScientists claim that humans are trained to find faces<\/p>\n<p>in everything\u2014the cracked windshield, a shirt\u2019s stain,<br \/>\nthe stopper for the drain\u2014but they also forget to say<\/p>\n<p>soil and waves will seek themselves in our skin. Grief<br \/>\ninvolve trades: <em>Sorry I\u2019m tide up. I\u2019m knot okay<\/em>. I still<\/p>\n<p>curl over my bent legs like a seashell when I think about<br \/>\nmy dead uncle. Or fate. Then I break down to seas\/ash\/<\/p>\n<p>hell. The pastor says, <em>he will always be mist<\/em>. Says, <em>now<br \/>\nhe is hole again<\/em>. But even when I imagine that pink sole<\/p>\n<p>of his beneath its ocean of flesh, or his branched veins<br \/>\nshielding their school of silver fish, they all start to spill<\/p>\n<p>out from his archway. Then ribcage. I remember how,<br \/>\nbefore he went in the grave, my uncle looked like that<\/p>\n<p>ocean was being siphoned up his leg, like his whole<br \/>\nbody was turning a shade of dolphin-sea-grey. It was<\/p>\n<p>as if his calf almost became a real calf then. Sylvia<\/p>\n<p>Plath cleaned her kitchen<br \/>\nand left reminders for herself.<\/p>\n<p>Alan Turing bought theatre tickets<br \/>\nand promised to see the Webbs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Dalloway said<br \/>\nshe would buy the flowers herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It turns out<br \/>\nthe learning curve in prison<br \/>\nis a depressed boxspring\u2014<\/p>\n<p>It is normal in prison<br \/>\nto have a <em>Bunkie<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That first visit, we wondered about<br \/>\nour father\u2019s new word\u2014 He kept<\/p>\n<p>using it<br \/>\nas though the word<br \/>\n<em>nothing <\/em>would mean the same thing to us.<\/p>\n<p>His first <em>Bunkie <\/em>was fifty years younger.<br \/>\nFrom El Salvador, he came to this country.<\/p>\n<p>El Salvador, then Ukraine, then Israel\u2014<br \/>\nTime in prison is as thick as telling.<\/p>\n<p>Prison is made of small stories.<\/p>\n<p>They sit elbow to elbow<br \/>\nand pass the salt. That last visit,<\/p>\n<p>we watched our father\u2019s mouth\u2014<\/p>\n<p>He hadn\u2019t raised his lids.<br \/>\nMaybe out of neglect, or<\/p>\n<p>he\u2019d found solace<br \/>\non the shut<\/p>\n<p>side of them.<\/p>\n<p>Prisoners sink in flat water.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t find air<br \/>\non torture worktables<\/p>\n<p>or in hospital self-assessments.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t
