These readings bring intimacy into our spaces of isolation, both through the affinity of poetry and through the warmth of being able to speak to each other across the distances.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/70tcoSzQh1E\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/4239\/how-to-write-anne-waldman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How to Write<\/a>\u201d<br \/>\nby Anne Waldman<br \/>\n<em>Issue no. 45, Winter 1968<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Perhaps I\u2019m kidding myself about<br \/>\nthe life I lead<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I feel I\u2019m dying<br \/>\nlike a lot of things I see around me<\/p>\n<p>Then I turn on the TV and understand<br \/>\nthat everything must still be moving<\/p>\n<p>Music, for example, and I rush outside<br \/>\naround the corner to a concert<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s so easy<\/p>\n<p>Everything accessible from where I<br \/>\nhappen to live at the moment<\/p>\n<p>Things like rock concerts not too many trees on 2nd Avenue<\/p>\n<p>Once, on the Sixth Avenue bus<br \/>\nI got a sudden sensation<br \/>\nI had been alive before<\/p>\n<p>That I was a man at some other time<br \/>\nTraveling<\/p>\n<p>You would think this strange if you were a woman<\/p>\n<p>If I were a man right now I\u2019d be getting out of the draft<br \/>\nbut I think I\u2019d want to be a poet too<\/p>\n<p>Which simply means alive, awake and digging everything<\/p>\n<p>Even that which makes me sick and want to die<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t really, you know<\/p>\n<p>I just don\u2019t want to be conscious sometimes<br \/>\nbecause when you\u2019re conscious in the ordinary way<br \/>\nyou have to think about yourself a lot<\/p>\n<p>Dull thoughts like what am I doing ?<\/p>\n<p>Uptown in a large crowd I want to sit down and cry<br \/>\nbecause everything is simple and complicated<br \/>\nall at once<\/p>\n<p>Everyone has this feeling<\/p>\n<p>Even people downtown<\/p>\n<p>It is very basic to the way we are<br \/>\nwhich is why I can say \u201cwe\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A lot of drugs can change you if you want<br \/>\nbecause you too are made of what drugs are made of<\/p>\n<p>In fact you are just a bundle of drugs<br \/>\nwhen you come right down to it<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t want to go into it<br \/>\nbut you\u2019ll see what I mean when you catch on<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not meant to sound snotty<br \/>\nI\u2019m open to whatever comes along<\/p>\n<p>This is the feeling I get before I take a plane<\/p>\n<p>Then everything\u2019s the same afterward anyway<\/p>\n<p>All into one space and here I am again<br \/>\nalive still, same worries on my mind<\/p>\n<p>The thing is don\u2019t worry!<br \/>\nYou are doing what you have to what you can<\/p>\n<p>You hear from your friends<br \/>\nThey let you know what\u2019s happening in California, Iowa<br \/>\nVermont and other places about the globe<\/p>\n<p>They take you out of your little room<br \/>\njust like the newspapers or the news<br \/>\nor the man you live with<\/p>\n<p>and put you in a much larger room<br \/>\none in which you are in constant motion around the clock<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>John Murillo is the author, most recently, of <\/em>Kontemporary Amerikan Poetry<em>, winner of the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Nicole Sealey is the author of <\/em>Ordinary Beast<em> and received the Rome Prize.
