These readings bring intimacy into our spaces of isolation, both through the affinity of poetry and through the warmth of being able to speak to each other across distances.<\/em><\/p>\n<p Shihab Nye<br \/>\n<em>(Issue no. 72, Winter 1977)<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is not so much that the boat passed<br \/>\nand you failed to notice it.<br \/>\nIt is more like the boat stopped<br \/>\ndirectly outside your bedroom window,<br \/>\nthe captain blowing the signal-horn,<br \/>\nthe band playing a rousing march.<\/p>\n<p>The boat shouted, waving bright flags,<br \/>\nits silver hull blinding in the sunlight.<\/p>\n<p>But you had this idea you were going by train.<br \/>\nYou kept checking the time-table,<br \/>\ndigging for tracks.<br \/>\nAnd the boat got tired of you,<br \/>\nso tired it pulled up the anchor<br \/>\nand raised the ramp.<\/p>\n<p>The boat bobbed into the distance,<br \/>\nshrinking like a toy\u2014<br \/>\nat which point you probably realized<br \/>\nyou had always loved the sea.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Sara Deniz Akant is the author of three books of poetry, most recently <\/em>Babette <em>(Rescue Press, 2015). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/7620\/dracula-by-marriage-sara-deniz-akant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Two of<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/7621\/bruce-baba-sara-deniz-akant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">her poems<\/a> appeared in the Winter 2020 issue. <a
