Embarking not just on a short trip, but on a Culture Diary, haunted already by George\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704026204575266841673124852.html\" target=\"_blank\">quote yesterday<\/a> in <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> when they asked people what they\u2019re reading this summer: \u201cI&#8217;m not going to play that game. Everyone says something that sounds smart and ends up taking Michael Connelly to the beach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">6:45 A.M.<\/strong> In and out of the bedroom while packing, so I hear bits of an NPR story about New Orleans music\u2014second line, bump. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">7:10 A.M.<\/strong> Bag ready, kids still asleep, I turn to my two ongoing Wordscraper games on Facebook. There are ample reasons to like and loathe Facebook, and I can\u2019t justify its existence or my participation in it, but what I can do is blame Nora Ephron. Her <a href=\"http:\/\/select.nytimes.com\/2007\/05\/13\/opinion\/13ephron.html\" target=\"_blank\">essay<\/a> about her online Scrabble addiction led me into a world I (happily) never knew existed: the world of <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-13577_3-9852054-36.html\" target=\"_blank\">Scrabulous<\/a>. Soon, I was the closest I\u2019ve ever come to an illicit online activity, playing rapid-fire games with total strangers who slaughtered me mercilessly. And then a friend told me we could play via Facebook, which I\u2019d assumed was off-limits to any self-respecting adult over twenty-five. (Many would argue this is still the case.) It was the beginning of the end. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">7:21 A.M.<\/strong> <em>Slate<\/em>. Dana Stevens, like every other critic I\u2019ve read so far, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2255246\/\">confirms<\/a> my sense that <em>Sex and the City 2<\/em> is an abomination upon womankind. William Saletan is in a dust-up with <em>The National Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">8:07 A.M.<\/strong> WNYC in the car to Newark Airport. Bob Henley, did you have to use the word \u201cconfab\u201d? I\u2019ll answer that: no, you did not. Long, depressing, infuriating story about the oil spill. Scott Simon riffs on airport security.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/EVENTS_ScottSimon-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1549\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">8:40 A.M.<\/strong> Turns out leaving Newark on Saturday during Memorial Day weekend is a breeze. I\u2019m in and out of security faster than you can say \u201cScott Simon.\u201d Which only leaves me more time to suffer the plague of modern travel: the CNN airport onslaught.  <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:00 A.M.<\/strong> Joy! My iPod John Prine Pandora station is working. So long, CNN.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:05 A.M.<\/strong> Rats. Pandora no longer working. Time to plug into Syd Straw\u2019s \u201cPink Velour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:30 A.M.<\/strong> iPod battery dead. CNN rage returns. Half-hour report that began with the dubious claim that \u201cSome people don\u2019t know how expensive college can be\u201d has been deemed \u201cincredible\u201d by the anchor. That\u2019s one word for it.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:35 A.M.<\/strong> Twitter. A blogger loves James Hynes\u2019s <em>Next<\/em>. And this is one reason why I love Twitter.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">10:15 A.M.<\/strong> Plane prepares for takeoff and I\u2019ve left my <em>New Yorker<\/em> in the overhead bin and I can\u2019t turn on my e-reader or iPod. Media withdrawal begins.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">10:30 A.M.<\/strong> Manuscript on e-reader for the short duration of the flight.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/french-open-court1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1543\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">2:15 P.M.<\/strong> Waiting to meet Pelecanos in hotel lobby. French Open! I haven\u2019t seen any of it yet. Nadal v. Hewitt for five minutes, then George and I head for Toronto\u2019s Greektown, and a great Greek feast.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">4:30 P.M.<\/strong> Manuscripts; nap.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">6:30 P.M.<\/strong> Hammett Awards, where I say hello to Walter Mosley and meet Jedediah Barry, whose novel <em>The Manual of Detection<\/em> is one of the prize finalists.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">10:00 P.M.<\/strong> After the ceremony, drinks with George, Canadian writers Linwood Barclay and Giles Blunt, and wonderful Deon Meyer, the South African writer who is here as an international guest of honor. They all seem to know an awful lot about films, soundtracks, motorcycles, and cars. I guess now\u2019s not the time to bring up <em>The Real Housewives<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><h3>DAY TWO<\/h3>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">6:00 A.M.<\/strong> Waiting for an early flight home. This time I\u2019ve got <em>The New Yorker<\/em> on hand, making me interested in things that don\u2019t interest me: Danica Patrick and Mexican drug wars. Impossibly brutal photo of a man who\u2019s been executed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/3167932547_62b1221ccb_m-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1545\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">8:30 A.M.<\/strong> Home in time to read <em>The New York Times<\/em> as if I\u2019d never left.  My Sunday <em>Times<\/em> reading always goes like this: Styles, Week in Review, front section, Sports, Business. From the party pictures I learn that artists like Brice Marden and Kiki Smith grow old gracefully, with silver hair and a satisfied glow about them. Weddings features an excellent bridal name: Dimple Chaudhary, and the official union of Koenig and Solomon, who have already been together for forty years. Scott (my husband) pokes his head in the living room to report that LeAnn Hansen just announced she\u2019s retiring from Weekend Edition Sunday. Week in Review: J.&thinsp;M. Coetzee\u2019s South African censor. Verlyn Klinkenborg on \u201ctexts\u201d vs. \u201cbooks.\u201d Dowd. Friedman. Rich. Front section (I\u2019m sure it has an official name, right?): Margot Fonteyn\u2019s failed Panamanian coup, yet another UK minister resigns for financial misdeeds, and in the Dennis Hopper obituary I learn that he was married to Brooke Hayward. How did that escape me? Sports: Alex Rodriguez smacked a line drive into the forehead of a Cleveland Indian and left the game to make sure he was alright. Andy Roddick is out of the French Open. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">12:00 P.M.<\/strong> My first day at our local pool, where it looks like at last the kids are self-sufficient and drown-proof enough to let me read uninterrupted. I\u2019ve packed the galley of Jonathan Franzen\u2019s <em>Freedom<\/em>, which keeps me happily occupied for the next three hours.  <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">6:30 P.M.<\/strong> Our Sunday evening routine: Scott makes dinner while I sit nearby and tackle the <em>Times Magazine<\/em> crossword. On Pandora: Ron Sexsmith radio. Heaven.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">8:00 P.M.<\/strong> Franzen\u2019s <em>Freedom<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:00 P.M.<\/strong> Catch up on the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbcamerica.com\/content\/327\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">Gavin and Stacey<\/a>\u201d episodes we\u2019d missed. If you don\u2019t love this weirdly sweet and wonderful BBC series, to quote an old Doonesbury line that is probably far too obscure: \u201cYour loss, toots!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><h3>DAY THREE<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/very_pregnant_mia_performs_at_grammys-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1547\" \/><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">5:00 A.M.<\/strong> Up early to edit a manuscript. Quick Twitter check: M.I.A.\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.observer.com\/2010\/media\/lynn-hirschbergs-response-mia-tweet-fairly-unethical-and-infuriating\" target=\"_blank\">fight<\/a> with Lynn Hirschberg, more BP oil outrage. Facebook: scan updates, make my Wordscraper moves.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">7:00 A.M.<\/strong> Making breakfast for the kids, half-listening to NPR and something about activists killed in Gaza. This sounds big, and happened too recently to be in the print edition of the paper, so I turn on the laptop and read about it online. Grim.  <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">7:30 A.M.<\/strong> <em>The New York Times<\/em>. The always interesting David Carr <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/31\/business\/media\/31carr.html?ref=media\">on the sale<\/a> of <em>Newsweek<\/em>. Venus Williams and Andy Murray are out of the French Open. A teenage girl is pitching for a men\u2019s baseball team.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">8:30 A.M.<\/strong> Quick trip to the nursery for patio herb garden, happily blasting WFUV. Fountains of Wayne. Martin Sexton, I\u2019m not sure the words \u201cpay-per-view TV\u201d should ever be used in a song lyric. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:30 A.M.<\/strong> Yoga, where the playlist often mirrors my own iPod, and today includes the Cowboy Junkies\u2019 great cover of \u201cSweet Jane,\u201d which reminds me of a good line in the Franzen when a character says the Velvet Underground always makes her feel lonely.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">12:30 P.M.<\/strong> Franzen at the pool.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">5:30 P.M.<\/strong> Richard Thompson Radio on Pandora. Fantastic Wilco cover of \u201cJames Alley Blues,\u201d from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000ICLTMS\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=B000ICLTMS&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=theparrev0f-20\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Harry Smith Project<\/em><\/a>, which I promptly buy online.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">10:00 P.M.<\/strong> <em>Real Housewives of New Jersey<\/em>. Like some of my other media habits, I have a hard time explaining or justifying my obsession with all things <em>Housewife<\/em>. I can only say I love every hideous thing about them. Except tonight, when Danielle proves that she\u2019s not just unpleasant, she\u2019s totally off her rocker, and Teresa throws a birthday party for her nine-year-old daughter that is truly horrifying.
