Set in pre-WWI Vienna, when \u201cthe world was deeply and frivolously at peace,\u201d it begins with a fairy-tale visit by the Persian Shah and ends in bankruptcy, alcoholism, and despair. But Roth\u2019s basic buoyancy\u2014unless it is that of the translator, Michael Hofmann\u2014makes this sad story a joy to read. \u2014<strong>Robyn Creswell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Terry Eagleton\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Evil-Terry-Eagleton\/dp\/0300151063\">On Evil<\/a><\/em> is a cogent study of a subject about which much is assumed, and little questioned. I often found myself disagreeing with his views, but I appreciated his careful writing, his stylish analysis, and, most of all, his ability to make theory both relevant and exciting. \u2014<strong>Rosalind Parry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This Sunday, I read David Levithan\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lovers-Dictionary-Novel-David-Levithan\/dp\/0374193681\/\">The Lover\u2019s Dictionary<\/a><\/em>. The narrator writes nonlinearly about a relationship through definitions for words like <em>aloof<\/em> and <em>fraught<\/em>. Here&#8217;s Levithan with \u201ccatharsis\u201d: \u201cI took it out on the wall. I LOVE YOU. I LOVE YOU. YOU FUCKER, I LOVE YOU.\u201d Is the couple still together? We never find out. \u2014<strong>Angela Melamud<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Christian Lorentzen on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.observer.com\/2011\/media\/almost-amis\">Martin Amis\u2019s move to Brooklyn<\/a>. And <a href=\"http:\/\/travel.nytimes.com\/2011\/04\/24\/travel\/24footsteps.html\">rambling with W. G. Sebald<\/a> in East Anglia. \u2014<strong>T.
