In these videograms, poets read and discuss the poems<\/em><em> that are helping them through these strange times\u2014broadcasting straight from their couches to yours. These readings bring intimacy into our spaces of isolation, both through the affinity of poetry and through the warmth of being able to speak to each other across distances.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qucgdC4px_A\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theparisreview.org\/poetry\/7654\/letters-in-winter-maya-c-popa\">Letters in Winter<\/a>\u201d<br \/>\nby Maya C. Popa<br \/>\n<em>Issue no. 236 (Spring 2021)<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There is not one leaf left on that tree<br \/>\non which a bird sits this Christmas morning,<\/p>\n<p>the sky heavy with snow that never arrives,<br \/>\nthe sun itself barely rising. In the overcast<\/p>\n<p>nothingness, it\u2019s easy to feel afraid,<br \/>\noverlooked by something that was meant<\/p>\n<p>to endure. It\u2019s difficult today to think clearly<br \/>\nthrough pain, some actual,<\/p>\n<p>most imagined; future pain I try lamely<br \/>\nto prepare myself for by turning your voice<\/p>\n<p>over in my mind, or imagining the day<br \/>\nI\u2019ll no longer hug my father, his grip<\/p>\n<p>tentative but desperate all the same.<br \/>\nAt the caf\u00e9, a woman describes lilacs<\/p>\n<p>in her garden. She is speaking of spring,<br \/>\nthe life after this one. The first thing<\/p>\n<p>to go when I shut the book between us<br \/>\nis the book; silence, its own alphabet,<\/p>\n<p>and still something so dear about it.<br \/>\nIt will be spring, I say over and over.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll ask that what I lost not grow back.<br \/>\nI see how winter is forbidding:<\/p>\n<p>it grows the heart by lessening everything else<br \/>\nand demands that we keep trying.<\/p>\n<p>I am trying.
