In these videograms, poets read and discuss the poems<\/em><em>\u00a0that are helping them through these strange times\u2014broadcasting straight from their couches to yours. These readings bring intimacy into our spaces of isolation, both through the affinity of poetry and through the warmth of being able to speak to each other across the distances.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NdZgTDUwv78\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theparisreview.org\/poetry\/3032\/leaving-another-kingdom-gerald-stern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leaving Another Kingdom<\/a>\u201d<br \/>\nby Gerald Stern<br \/>\n<em>Issue no. 90 (Winter 1983)<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I think this year I\u2019ll wait for the white lilacs<br \/>\nbefore I get too sad.<br \/>\nI\u2019ll let the daffodils go, flower by flower,<br \/>\nand the blue squill go, and the primroses.<br \/>\nLevine will be here by then,<br \/>\nwaving fountain pens, carrying rolled-up posters<br \/>\nof Ike Williams and King Levinsky.<br \/>\nHe will be reaching into his breast pocket<br \/>\nfor maps of grim Toledo<br \/>\nshowing the downtown grilles and the bus stations.<br \/>\nHe and I together<br \/>\nwill get on our hands and knees<br \/>\non the warm ground<br \/>\nin the muddy roses<br \/>\nunder the thorn tree.<br \/>\nWe will walk the mile to my graveyard<br \/>\nwithout one word of regret,<br \/>\ntwo rich poets<br \/>\ngoing over the past a little,<br \/>\nchanging a thing or two,<br \/>\nmaking a few connections,<br \/>\ndoing it all with balance,<br \/>\nstopping along the way to pet a wolf,<br \/>\nslowing down at the locks,<br \/>\ngiving each other lectures on early technology,<br \/>\nmentioning eels and snakes,<br \/>\ntouching a little on our two cities,<br \/>\ncursing our Henrys a little,<br \/>\nhis Ford, my Frick,<br \/>\nbeing almost human about it, almost decent,<br \/>\nsliding over the stones to reach the island.<br \/>\nthrowing spears on the way,<br \/>\nstaring for twenty minutes at two robins<br \/>\nstarting a life together in rural Pennsylvania,<br \/>\nkicking a heavy tire, square and monstrous,<br \/>\nhuge and soggy, maybe a 49 Hudson,<br \/>\nmaybe a 40 Packard, maybe a Buick<br \/>\nwith mohair seats and silken cords<br \/>\nand tiny panes of glass\u2014both of us seeing<br \/>\nthe same car, each of us driving<br \/>\nour own brick road, both of us whistling<br \/>\nthe same idiotic songs, the tops of trees flying,<br \/>\nhouses sailing along, the way they did then,<br \/>\nboth of us walking down to the end of the island<br \/>\nso we could put our feet in the water, so I could<br \/>\nshow him where the current starts, so we could<br \/>\nlook for bottles and worn-out rubbers, Trojans<br \/>\nfull of holes, the guarantee run out\u2014<br \/>\nlove gone slack and love gone flat\u2014<br \/>\na few feet away from New Jersey near the stones<br \/>\nthat look like large white turtles guarding the entrance<br \/>\nto the dangerous channel where those lovers\u2014Tristan<br \/>\nand his Isolt, Troilus and you know who,<br \/>\ncame roaring by on inner tubes, their faces<br \/>\nwet with happiness, the shrieks and sighs<br \/>\nleft up the river somewhere, now their fingers<br \/>\ntrailing through the wake, now their arms out<br \/>\nto keep themselves from falling, now in the slow part<br \/>\npast the turtles and into the bend, we sitting there<br \/>\nputting on our shoes, he with Nikes,<br \/>\nme with Georgia loggers, standing up<br \/>\nand smelling the river, walking single file<br \/>\nuntil we reach the pebbles, singing in French<br \/>\nall the way back, losing the robins forever,<br \/>\nlosing the Buick, walking into the water,<br \/>\nleaving another island, leaving another<br \/>\nretreat, leaving another kingdom.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Cheswayo Mphanza\u2019s debut poetry collection is<\/em> The Rinehart Frames <em>(University of Nebraska Press).
