{"id":149684,"date":"2020-12-09T15:47:24","date_gmt":"2020-12-09T20:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/?p=149684"},"modified":"2020-12-10T11:50:41","modified_gmt":"2020-12-10T16:50:41","slug":"the-reality-of-color","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2020\/12\/09\/the-reality-of-color\/","title":{"rendered":"The Reality of Color"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u201cThe visual is a language that must be learnt too, as one learns French or English or Arabic,\u201d said the artist and poet Etel Adnan in an interview earlier this year with <\/em>Apartamento<em>.<\/em><em> \u201cWhat I love about colours though is that we cannot own colour; we can only accept its reality.\u201d If anyone could stake a claim on color, though, it would be Adnan, now ninety-five and continuing her relentless pursuit of a vocabulary all her own. Few other artists wield such a range of shades with her confidence; it seems nearly impossible that one could encounter her paintings and tapestries without feeling the slightest spark of joy at the wild, vibrant hues she conjures: pungent neon greens, charred oranges, and sad, bluish grays light enough to display the mark of the brush. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.galerielelong.com\/exhibitions\/etel-adnan5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seasons<\/a>,\u201d Adnan\u2019s second solo exhibition with Galerie Lelong &amp; Co. in New York, will be on view through December 23, 2020.
