Today I\u2019m a five-o\u2019clock-in-the-morning riser. Although I do stare at the wall a lot.<\/p>\n

I think of myself as a very lazy writer, though other people see it differently. My daughter, who recently graduated from medical school, once told me, \u201cDad, I\u2019ve never known anyone who works as hard as you. You\u2019re up at four, five o\u2019clock in the morning, you work all day, then you collapse. At nine o\u2019clock, you\u2019re in bed, then you\u2019re up the next morning at four to start all over again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gide says somewhere that art and crime both require leisure time to flourish. I spend a lot of time thinking, if not daydreaming. People think of me as a genre writer, and a genre writer is supposed to be prolific. Since that\u2019s how people perceive me, they have to say I\u2019m prolific. But I don\u2019t find that either complimentary or accurate.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To be fair, I can\u2019t really say that I enjoy vacations. I\u2019m on vacation all the time, so when I\u2019m away it feels like work. I am a jewelry consultant at a five-star hotel, where I tend to a nook filled with gems. All week long I daydream to the sound of heels clacking across a polished marble floor. My mind melts. I could be miles away. I could be at the beach! Occasionally the phone rings, and then there\u2019s some real excitement\u2014a guest is placing an order for a surprise. The rest is a breeze. I take lunch twice. At two, I put a sign on the door and go for a jog. BE BACK SOON<\/small>. No one seems to mind.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Q Is the Quick<\/a>

\u201cThe quick brown fox jumps
\nOver the lazy dog\u201d: It was a little bedtime story
\nAnd it was only told us if we would \u201cbe quiet.\u201d
\nBut quiet was a difficult thing to be.
\nThe heart makes a jump-start sound.<\/p>\n

Each time someone comes up the steps\u2014
\nBoth their feet give off the white grate of shoe leather
\nAs it meets a stair. They wanted us also to \u201cbe happy\u201d\u2014
\nWhich was even more difficult
\nIn view of the sad fact<\/p>\n

That happiness is part of a pair called a \u201csmug set\u201d;
\nHappiness plus some other benignly self-satisfied state.
\nThe story, once we \u201cdeserved\u201d it, began,
\n\u201cShh, be quiet,\u201d
\nJust as the quick baby was about to leap \u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
