{"id":147368,"date":"2020-09-03T17:25:27","date_gmt":"2020-09-03T21:25:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/?p=147368"},"modified":"2020-09-03T17:25:27","modified_gmt":"2020-09-03T21:25:27","slug":"a-tree-is-a-relative-a-cousin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2020\/09\/03\/a-tree-is-a-relative-a-cousin\/","title":{"rendered":"A Tree Is a Relative, a Cousin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u201cWhen that first photograph was taken of Earth from space and you saw this little ball in blackness,\u201d said the artist Luchita Hurtado in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hauserwirth.com\/stories\/23902-luchita-hurtado-conversation-sarah-lehrer-graiwer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2019 interview<\/a>, \u201cI became aware of what I felt I was. I feel very much that a tree is a relative, a cousin. Everything in this world, I find, I\u2019m related to.\u201d This relationship with nature\u2014the human body mingling with the landscape, the landscape blending with the body and assuming its dips and swells\u2014permeates Hurtado\u2019s paintings and drawings. A friend of Frida Kahlo, Isamu Noguchi, and many other luminaries of the art world, Hurtado continued to refine her practice, largely in private, right up until her death in August at the age of ninety-nine. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hauserwirth.com\/hauser-wirth-exhibitions\/29566-luchita-hurtado-together-forever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luchita Hurtado. Together Forever<\/a>,\u201d which showcases work from more than half a century of her career, opens at Hauser &amp; Wirth\u2019s Twenty-Second Street location on September 10, 2020.
