It tells us that the narrator has learned about sex in a way that occludes the danger\u00a0 of pedophilia. \u201cMen\u201d shouldn\u2019t kiss \u201cgirls,\u201d obviously. Girls are children. Men are adults.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>\u2014Ottessa Moshfegh, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/7567\/i-was-a-public-schooler-ottessa-moshfegh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I Was a Public Schooler<\/a>\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/7568\/witness-jamel-brinkley\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-146987\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/brinkley.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"936\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/brinkley.jpg 936w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/brinkley-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/brinkley-768x429.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This simple sentence, and the word it quickly lands on, grew increasingly magnetic as I worked through the various drafts of this story. It made me recognize that one of the story\u2019s desires was to be in conversation with the work of a couple of writers I often think about and feel indebted to: James Baldwin (\u201cthe line which separates a witness from an actor is a very thin line indeed; nevertheless, the line is real,\u201d from <i>I Am Not Your Negro<\/i>) and Gina Berriault (\u201cBe an eyewitness to this too,\u201d from \u201cAround the Dear Ruin\u201d). As the story attempts to engage with medical racism directed against Black people, and Black women in particular, it also, I hope, wrestles with the responsibility of perceiving as much as one can possibly bear and the moral challenge of taking action.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>\u2014Jamel Brinkley, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/7568\/witness-jamel-brinkley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Witness<\/a>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/7565\/violets-bud-smith\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-146988\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/smith.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"936\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/smith.jpg 936w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/smith-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/smith-768x429.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Two things in that sentence were important to me: the couple is so close they have a suicide pact, nobody knows them better than they know each other; and the universe is chaotic. Just a day after they decided to end their lives, they get a letter in which the bank promises to take their home away. It leads into: \u201cThat night instead of killing ourselves in the backyard like the plan had been Monique and I got revenge and set the place on fire.\u201d Yes. They lived in an unorganized universe, but random bliss could be found in it. I was as surprised as they were by what was discovered in those fires.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>\u2014Bud Smith, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/7565\/violets-bud-smith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Violets<\/a>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/7569\/the-duplex-amy-silverberg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-146991\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/silverberg-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"936\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/silverberg-1.jpg 936w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/silverberg-1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/silverberg-1-768x429.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I think this is when the protagonist\u2019s voice gained steam for me. I never write a story based on a premise or subject matter, only on the way a voice sounds\u2014one sentence, then another, until it goes somewhere (or sometimes doesn\u2019t). With this sentence, I understood the core longing in this story, and I also understood that the protagonist could only sort of tell you about it. To sleep naked and alone felt paradoxical; it meant she desired intimacy but not enough to leave her bed and find it. Or maybe it seemed like something someone would say if they were remembering past intimacy they no longer had access to. Either way, it felt weighty.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>\u2014Amy Silverberg, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/7569\/the-duplex-amy-silverberg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Duplex<\/a>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/7566\/the-jugglers-wife-emily-hunt-kivel\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-146990\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/kivel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"936\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/kivel.jpg 936w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/kivel-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/kivel-768x429.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I tend to be creatively interested in characters who are either totally ridiculous or secret sages. This line kept me guessing. I disagree on principle, but see how and why and when this can feel true. The simplicity of the sentence had a certain pitch that felt right for this story, too: a starkness and a confusion between the serious and the silly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>\u2014Emily Hunt Kivel, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/7566\/the-jugglers-wife-emily-hunt-kivel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Juggler\u2019s Wife<\/a>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/back-issues\/233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Dive into the Summer
