Unlocked this week are seven pieces from recent issues of <\/em>The Paris Review<em> by Black writers who have also recently published books. Her debut story collection, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1531\/9781496201867\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Black Jesus and Other Superheroes<\/a><\/em>, won the Prairie Schooner Book Prize for fiction, and Blackburn was a finalist for both the <small>PEN<\/small>\/Bingham Prize for debut fiction and the Young Lions Award from the New York Public Library. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/7568\/witness-jamel-brinkley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Witness<\/a>,\u201d by Jamel Brinkley (issue no. 233, Summer 2020), is a sobering examination of race and health care in America. Brinkley\u2019s story collection <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1531\/9781555978433\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>A Lucky Man<\/em><\/a> was a finalist for the National Book Award.<\/p>\n<p>Two unpublished poems by Lucille Clifton, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/7547\/poem-to-my-yellow-coat-lucille-clifton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">poem to my yellow coat<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/7548\/bouquet-lucille-clifton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bouquet<\/a>,\u201d appear in issue no. 233, Summer 2020. They\u2019re drawn from a group of unpublished poems that will be included in <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1531\/9781950774142\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>How to Carry Water<\/em><\/a>, a career-spanning selection of Clifton\u2019s work due out in September.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel Eliza Griffiths\u2019s poem \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theparisreview.org\/poetry\/7519\/hunger-rachel-eliza-griffiths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hunger<\/a>\u201d (issue no. 232, Spring 2020) is a searing elegy for the poet\u2019s mother that wrestles with and takes inspiration from a kind of magical thinking. The poem comes from her just-published collection of poetry and photography, <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1531\/9781324005667\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Seeing the Body<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Told largely in rapid-fire dialogue, J.\u2009M. Holmes\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/6942\/whats-wrong-with-you-whats-wrong-with-me-j-m-holmes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">What\u2019s Wrong with You? What\u2019s Wrong with Me?<\/a>\u201d (issue no. 221, Summer 2017, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/podcast\/6050\/lift-and-fall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Paris Review Podcast<\/em> Episode 16<\/a>) barrels toward a shocking revelation about racism and sex. The story appears in his first book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1531\/9780316514859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How Are You Going to Save Yourself<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell S. Jackson\u2019s essay \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theparisreview.org\/letters-essays\/7236\/exodus-mitchell-s-jackson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Exodus<\/a>\u201d (issue no. 226, Fall 2018) begins in \u201cthe wilderness of my hometown\u201d and ends at the foot of the stairs of \u201cwhat would be my new home.\u201d It opens into a story of life marked by violence and addiction that continues in his memoir, <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1531\/9781501131738\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Survival Math: Notes on an All-American Family<\/em><\/a>, which was named one of NPR\u2019s favorite books of 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The protagonist of Way\u00e9tu Moore\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/7170\/gbessa-wayetu-moore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gbessa<\/a>\u201d (issue no. 225, Summer 2018) is deemed a \u201ccursed\u201d child by the people in her town and must suffer their derision and blame for circumstances beyond their control. \u201cGbessa\u201d became the first chapter of Moore\u2019s debut novel, <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1531\/9781644450017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>She Would Be King<\/em><\/a>.
