What is it<br \/>\nThat decides why some of them are pushed away,<br \/>\nAnd others sweep across the livid waters?\u201d<br \/>\nThe aged priestess replied: \u201cAnchise\u2019s son,<br \/>\nTrue scion of the gods, these are the pools<br \/>\nOf the river Cocytos, and this the Stygian marsh,<br \/>\nWhose power it is to make the gods afraid<br \/>\nNot to keep their word. All in this crowd are helpless<br \/>\nBecause their bodies have not been covered over.<br \/>\nThe boatman that you see is Charon. Those<br \/>\nWho are being carried across with him are they<br \/>\nWho have been buried. It is forbidden to take<br \/>\nAny with him across the echoing waters<br \/>\nThat flow between these terrible riverbanks<br \/>\nWho have not found a resting-place for their bones.<br \/>\nRestlessly to and fro along these shores<br \/>\nThey wander waiting for a hundred years.<br \/>\nNot until after that, the longed-for
