Mourning too.<br \/>\nMahalia singing\u00a0<em>On My Way<br \/>\n<\/em>and making it to\u00a0<em>Cay-nen Land.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On a rock, sit, listen to Bjorling<br \/>\nsing\u00a0<em>Only a Rose<br \/>\n<\/em>over your friend\u2019s ashes.<\/p>\n<p>Chaffinch on the clothesline\u2014<br \/>\nrosy biscuit breast aglow\u2014<br \/>\nwill any minute<\/p>\n<p>confirm himself in song.<br \/>\nAnd listen,<br \/>\nthe thin single note<\/p>\n<p>of the sandpiper in lakedusk:<br \/>\nbeige and bright white,<br \/>\nprecise bill opening, closing:<\/p>\n<p>only the one note<br \/>\nbut enough to cut across<br \/>\nthe whole valley<\/p>\n<p>as a nightwind shakes<br \/>\nthe stiff green reeds to whispering.<br \/>\nPain, even a single grain of it<\/p>\n<p>anywhere in the body<br \/>\nis a kind of stop and focus,<br \/>\nturning us to pure attention,<\/p>\n<p>as may happen<br \/>\nwith some small invisible<br \/>\nwinged thing singing in the thick of hedges.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Tess Taylor is the author of the chapbook <\/em>The Misremembered World<em>, <\/em>The Forage House<em>, and <\/em>Work &amp; Days.<em>\u00a0In spring 2020 she published two books of poems: <\/em>Last
