White<br \/>\n<em>Issue no. 104 (Fall 1987)<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dawn in New York has<br \/>\nfour columns of mire<br \/>\nand a hurricane of black pigeons<br \/>\nsplashing in the putrid waters.<\/p>\n<p>Dawn in New York groans<br \/>\non enormous fire escapes<br \/>\nsearching between the angles<br \/>\nfor spikenards of drafted anguish.<\/p>\n<p>Dawn arrives and no one receives it in his mouth<br \/>\nbecause morning and hope are impossible there.<br \/>\nAnd sometimes the furious swarming coins<br \/>\npenetrate like drills and devour abandoned children.<\/p>\n<p>Those who got out early know in their bones<br \/>\nthere will be no paradise or loves that bloom and die;<br \/>\nthey know they will be mired in numbers and laws,<br \/>\nin mindless games, in fruitless labors.<\/p>\n<p>The light is buried beneath chains and noises,<br \/>\nan important warning to rootless science.<br \/>\nAnd crowds stagger sleeplessly through the boroughs<br \/>\nas if they had
