Genya Turovskaya was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and grew up in New York City. She is the author of The Breathing Body of This Thought<\/em> (Black Square, 2019) and the chapbooks Calendar<\/em> (Ugly Duckling, 2002), The Tides<\/em> (Octopus, 2007), New Year\u2019s Day<\/em> (Octopus, 2011), and Dear Jenny<\/em> (Supermachine, 2011). Her poetry and translations of contemporary Russian poets have appeared in Chicago Review<\/em>, Conjunctions<\/em>, A Public Space<\/em>, and other publications. Her translation of Aleksandr Skidan\u2019s Red Shifting<\/em> was published by Ugly Duckling in 2008. She is a cotranslator of Elena Fanailova\u2019s Russian Version<\/em> (UDP, 2009, 2019), which won the University of Rochester\u2019s Three Percent Award for Best Translated Book of Poetry in 2010. She is also a cotranslator of Endarkenment, The Selected Poems of Arkadii Dragomoshchenko<\/em> (Wesleyan, 2014). She lives in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

I am beside myself<\/p>\n

I have no beast in this ring, no horse in this race<\/p>\n

Nobody always waves goodbye<\/p>\n

The stars are different here<\/p>\n

The wind is gusting in reverse <\/p>\n

I left something out, something crucial, crossing through the customs gate<\/p>\n

A figure, behind me, waving, reflected in the plexiglass partition<\/p>\n

I could recognize the shape but not the face<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t need to; I knew it<\/p>\n

An empty window<\/p>\n

Limp curtain flapping in the breeze<\/p>\n

I pitched forward, tried to right myself, but kept falling without end<\/p>\n

Keep falling to no end<\/p>\n

There was nothing there to catch on, snag against<\/p>\n

A tantalizing glitter, a blatant blank<\/p>\n

The fortune in the fortune cookie says Learn Chinese<\/em><\/p>\n

To have a fever<\/em><\/p>\n

And When one can one must<\/em><\/p>\n

Where do I live?<\/p>\n

Where do I go when I go away?<\/p>\n

The departures board was wiped clean<\/p>\n

There was no message<\/p>\n

But something happens to interrupt all well-laid plans<\/p>\n

I was alert to the fog, a fugue of massing clouds, to a change in pressure, coalescing rivulets of rain<\/p>\n

A physical vibration, the faintest tremor of the ground beneath my feet, the shifting of tectonic plates<\/p>\n

The chafe, the plea<\/em> in pleasure, for pleasure\u2019s sake<\/p>\n

Or was the fortune: When one must one can<\/em>?<\/p>\n

I recognized the empty window, the tantalizing glitter of my own reflection<\/p>\n

The shape but not the face<\/p>\n

I knew it, that there would be no message, no way to get a message back<\/p>\n

I fell I fall I left I leave something out<\/p>\n

The ground beneath my feet gives way<\/p>\n

Where were we?<\/p>\n

Here I am?<\/p>\n

Where do I go?<\/p>\n

Who is the witness to this story that I tell myself?<\/p>\n

Is this rupture?<\/p>\n

Rapture?<\/p>\n

Attention? Inattention?<\/p>\n

The bonds grown slack?<\/p>\n

There is an errand I\u2019ve been sent on<\/p>\n

An errancy<\/p>\n

I am not spared<\/p>\n

I am inside the observation tower beside myself astride the horse<\/p>\n

I do not have a horse in this<\/p>\n

Nobody ever always waves goodbye goodbye<\/p>\n

The stars are different here, the stars do not make sense<\/p>\n

I can connect these burning dots<\/p>\n

There is a hummingbird<\/p>\n

There a dancing bear<\/p>\n

There a face with night pouring out of the black sockets of its eyes<\/p>\n

What are these strange celestial figurations?<\/p>\n

Is any crossing safe?<\/p>\n

When does the dancing bear claw its way back to nature?<\/p>\n

When does a hummingbird become a hurricane?<\/p>\n

Which is the miracle and which the natural disaster?<\/p>\n
