Click <a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/04\/06\/a-week-in-culture-kim-hastreiter-editor\/\">here<\/a> to read part 1. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14071\" title=\"Kim Hastreiter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/KimH_culturediary_BLOG.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"574\" height=\"331\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>DAY FOUR<\/h3>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:05 A.M.<\/strong> Hop over with Drew and Jacob to Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills to catch <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gagosian.com\/exhibitions\/2011-02-26_james-franco-gus-van-sant\/\">the Gus Van Sant show<\/a> as well as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gagosian.com\/exhibitions\/2011-02-25_ed-ruscha\/\">Ed Ruscha garbage paintings<\/a>. The guys were drooling over the Van Sant homoerotic boy paintings. They were just okay in my book and forty thousand dollars each. And the exhibition was sponsored by Gucci. (<em>So<\/em> LA). I liked the Ruscha garbage paintings, although I wouldn\u2019t have bought any of this art even if I were a zillionaire.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14287\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14287\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/gus-van-sant-sponsored-by-gucci-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Gus Van Sant\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-14287\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gus Van Sant at Gagosian. <\/p><\/div><strong>12:15 P.M.<\/strong> I dropped off the boys at the hotel and headed up to Laurel Canyon to visit my friend, the artist Adele Lutz. Within five minutes of Hollywood Boulevard, I was completely in nature. We hung out drinking diet cokes in Adele&#8217;s lush backyard looking for mountain lions (one walked through her yard just the week before!).<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">2:45 P.M.<\/strong> Starving. Adele and I head down to a wonderful new spot I heard about called <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.laweekly.com\/squidink\/2010\/08\/tinga_mexican_la_brea.php\">Tinga<\/a>, on La Brea and Second\u00a0Street, where they make the most yummy Oaxacan street food. Boy, did we have an outrageous lunch. The food is ridiculous and the folks who run it are sweethearts. They kept giving us stuff to try. <span class=\"annotation\">Crazy good<\/span>. They gave us a salsa made from toasted grasshoppers. Yikes.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14294\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14294\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/norwegian-chefs-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Norwegian chefs.\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-14294\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14294\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Norwegian chefs.<\/p><\/div><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">6:30 P.M.<\/strong> Head downstairs to the Standard pool to check out the setup for our &#8220;Beautiful People&#8221; party we\u2019re throwing with Guess. It starts at seven. Everyone is running around. Madness. Meet Josh Madden who is deejaying for us and bond with him immediately. He is cute, smart, and a true-blue <em>Paper<\/em> fanatic. His brothers are famous: Joel and Benji Madden of Good Charlotte. Josh is more into being a regular guy. The party is full blast by eight. My posse arrives: the Brunettis, Press and Gefter, Cameron Silver and Jeff Snyder, and my old friend Debi Mazar decked head to toe in Isabel Toledo with her cute husband, Gabriele, in tow. Their Cooking Channel show <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cookingchanneltv.com\/extra-virgin\/index.html\">Extra Virgin<\/a><\/em> is a hit, so bulbs are flashing. It&#8217;s fun. Cobrasnake comes with his mom, who I adore with the hilarious Johnny Makeup! <em>Paper<\/em> fans are everywhere. Four identically dressed chefs from Norway introduce themselves, as does Jesse Williams, the gorgeous guy who plays one of the <em>Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> doctors. Turns out he\u2019s a big <em>Paper<\/em> fan! Beautiful person Keri Hilson sings fiercely. It\u2019s a success so I breathe a sigh of relief, run upstairs, and pack, as we have to be at the airport at five A.M. the next morning to catch the first flight back to New York to be back in time to throw our East Coast &#8220;Beautiful People&#8221; party that night! Oy vey.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>DAY FIVE<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">4:45 A.M.<\/strong> Head to LAX. We are outta here.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14291\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14291\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Aziz1-thumb-500xauto-41593-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Aziz Ansari\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-14291\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14291\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aziz Ansari.<\/p><\/div><strong>3:10 P.M.<\/strong> Touchdown JFK. Head directly to <em>Paper<\/em> offices to sign checks and put out fires until heading to Good Units at the Hudson Hotel, where our &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/billyfarrellagency.com\/home\/event\/975\">Beautiful People<\/a>&#8221; New York party (hosted by funny cover boy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.papermag.com\/arts_and_style\/2011\/03\/aziz-ansari-is-a-stand-up-guy.php\">Aziz Ansari<\/a>) is warming up.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">7:30 P.M.<\/strong> At Good Units red carpet, the photogs are lined up, as are people waiting to get in. The excitement is palpable, as Duran Duran\u2019s performing for us tonight and the kids are gagging with excitement. My partner, David Hershkovits, and I head to the green room to greet the band and say hi to our old friend Nick Rhodes. The guys are sweethearts and every one of them looks handsome and cute. They are our kind of peeps, and their impending new album, produced by Mark Ronson, has a huge buzz. Yup, Duran Duran is having a moment. And we are, of course, capturing it. The party rocks. The band plays for an hour to screaming, thumping, jumping crowd of young kids and oldsters like me. It was one of those legendary moments in <em>Paper<\/em> history to be talked about and remembered for years to come.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">12:00 A.M.<\/strong> Home. Boy, am I tired.<\/p>\n<h3>DAY SIX<\/h3>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14296\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14296\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/FARMERS-articleLarge-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-14296\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14296\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Japanese dairy farmer. <\/p><\/div><strong>9:00 A.M.<\/strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\"> Latte and <em>The New York Times<\/em>. Totally sad and depressing news about Japan\u2019s nuke meltdown and the people of Japan&#8217;s scary surreal limbo they are living in and trying to make sense of. A farmer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/30\/world\/asia\/30farmers.html\">who is a seventeenth-generation farmer<\/a> who does not know what to do now that his land is filled with radiation; imagine a dairy farmer who milks his hundreds of cows every day but must throw away the milk. People who are becoming more desperate (and destitute) by the day but because of their culture and nature are methodically trudging forward although not knowing where forward is taking them. It&#8217;s so horrible. No one can get their head around this slow-motion holocaust.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14298\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14298\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/MM_in_Missoni-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Mr. Mickey\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-14298\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14298\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mr. Mickey.<\/p><\/div><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:00 A.M.<\/strong> Deadline for our upcoming May &#8220;Social Network&#8221; issue is impending. I work with <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/askmrmickey\">Mr. Mickey<\/a> who has his shit together and has organized the cover shoot of Duran Duran for the following day and the fashion shoot about blogger stylists for the weekend. I work on my guru interview transcription of <span class=\"annotation\">Andy Cohen<\/span> for the issue. <\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">6:00 P.M.<\/strong> Quick twelve-dollar manicure at my favorite <em><span class=\"annotation\">Vogue<\/span><\/em> nail salon on Sixth Avenue at 12th\u00a0Street. <\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14300\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/tumblr_lh5n4kBtC61qfiut5o1_500-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Isabel and Ruben Toledo\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-14300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14300\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Isabel and Ruben Toledo.<\/p><\/div><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">8:00 P.M.<\/strong> Taxi down to Louis Vuitton shop in Soho to a party and to hear an art conversation between two of my favorite people: <em>T<\/em>\u2019s Sally Singer and artist Ruben Toledo. To hear Ruben talk about arriving in Miami at age six and being given a leopard shirt and white cowboy boots and a ride to New Jersey was amazing. And of course talk about his other half, his wife, Isabel Toledo, who he has collaborated with creatively since he was thirteen, when the two of them met. He is a hilarious interview and a totally eccentric, imaginative, outsider who will be in the history books for sure.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:00 P.M.<\/strong> Catch up on my DVR\u2019d reality shows: <em>The Real Housewives of Miami<\/em>, <em>The Real Housewives of Orange County<\/em>, <em>Million Dollar Listing<\/em>, <em>Top Chef<\/em>, <em>Selling New York<\/em>, <em>Jersey Shore<\/em>, Oprah\u2019s season twenty-five. Trash like this really helps me relax.<\/p>\n<h3>DAY SEVEN<\/h3>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_14302\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14302\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/margaret-kilgallen_banjo_pimp-336x500-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Margaret Kilgallen\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-14302\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Margaret Kilgallen<\/p><\/div><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">9:00 A.M.<\/strong> RAIN. COLD. I\u2019m sick of winter. Poached eggs and skim latte at a breakfast meeting at the Standard Grill. Grabbed a copy of the new \u201cArt on the Streets\u201d <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.juxtapoz.com\/Current\/april-2011juxtapoz-art-in-the-streets-issue\">Juxtapoz<\/a><\/em> at the Standard store. Love the article on the late artist Margaret Kilgallen. She was a brilliant artist.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">11:30 A.M.<\/strong> Just plain work.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">4:00 P.M.<\/strong> Head to photographer Jake Chessum\u2019s photo studio to do the <em>Paper<\/em> cover shoot and to hang with Duran Duran boys, check out their looks, and make sure everyone\u2019s having fun. What a great vibe. The boys look fabulous. They&#8217;re styled by our very own Luigi Tadini. I&#8217;m in love. And Jake C. is killing it. They are all sweethearts\u2013regular nice guys and by now they are, of course, in love with our whole <em>Paper<\/em> family. I bond with Yasmine, Simon&#8217;s beautiful wife, who is lovely and super nice.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">7:00 P.M.<\/strong> T.G.M.W.S.
