Photo: Betty Freeman.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>To put it mildly, John Cage\u2019s <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/sigliopress.com\/book\/diary-how-to-improve-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diary: How to Improve the World (You Will Only Make Matters Worse)<\/a><em> is no ordinary account of days gone by; a plain record of events would be too simple for such a daring and meticulous artist. The product of thirty years,<\/em> Diary <em>allows us a glimpse of the late twentieth century through Cage\u2019s eyes.<\/em><em> His insights and observations reveal a generous, openhearted view of the world in tumult. In keeping with this openness is the book\u2019s methodology: using a number generator based on the<\/em> <em>I Ching,<\/em><em> Cage would allow chance to determine each entry\u2019s word count, left margination, and typeface. Like much of Cage\u2019s oeuvre, the complexity of this process melts away in the experience of the work. Here, for instance, is the first page of Part II, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/letters-essays\/4332\/diary-how-to-improve-the-world-john-cage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">originally published<\/a> in the Winter\u2013Spring 1967 issue of <\/em>The Paris Review<em>:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/siglio-cage-diary-28.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-140633 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/siglio-cage-diary-28.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/siglio-cage-diary-28.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/siglio-cage-diary-28-209x300.jpg 209w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/siglio-cage-diary-28-768x1102.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/siglio-cage-diary-28-714x1024.jpg 714w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>At first glance, it scans as chaos. In practice, it reads like poetry, though the typographical pyrotechnics lend it a unique tactility, as though the letters are swelling off the page. In 2015, <\/em>Diary<em> appeared in a single volume for the first time, published by Siglio Press. <a href=\"http:\/\/sigliopress.com\/book\/diary-how-to-improve-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A new paperback version<\/a> has just been released, now with a selection of pages from the unpublished ninth installment in Cage\u2019s project (he had planned ten parts in all but completed only eight by the time of his death, in 1992). Six facsimile pages from Cage\u2019s notebooks appear below.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/siglio-cage-diary-180.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-140624\"
