{"id":14035,"date":"2011-04-08T13:09:19","date_gmt":"2011-04-08T17:09:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/?p=14035"},"modified":"2011-04-08T14:32:52","modified_gmt":"2011-04-08T18:32:52","slug":"from-the-archives-sundays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2011\/04\/08\/from-the-archives-sundays\/","title":{"rendered":"From the Archives: &#8216;Sundays&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/james-salter-month\/\">James Salter month<\/a>, and in lieu of <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/this-weeks-reading\/\">This Week\u2019s Reading<\/a>,\u00a0we are opening our archives to share some of the many short stories that Salter published in the <em>Review<\/em>. \u201c<a href=\"\/fiction\/4373\/sundays-james-salter\">Sundays<\/a>\u201d (<a href=\"\/back-issues\/38\">issue 38, 1966<\/a>) is a sensual, contemplative story (and part of what we all have come to know as the novel <em>A Sport and a Pastime<\/em>). Every setting is intimate and quiet and seems to belong entirely to the couple at the center of the story: the bed they awake in, the lake they dip their faces in, the pines they picnic in, the cafe they take shelter in, and the bed to which they return:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>They put their clothes on behind the car. No one else is around. Near to shore the surface of the water is broken by weeds. The leather seats are hot, and when Dean starts the engine small birds skim out ofthe grass and out across the lake.<\/p>\n<p>They eat in Montsauche in a little auberge. Sunday. Everything is hushed. Dean sits looking out at the street. It\u2019s a silent meal. Afterwards there is nothing to do. He feels as if he is taking care of a child. He is thinking of other things. The day seems long. They drive\u2014Dean takes the top down and they head towards Nevers, the wind curving in, the sun on their backs. He begins to grow sleepy. They pull off the road.<\/p>\n<p>They sit down under the trees. Pines. It\u2019s very quiet. The dry cones click in the breeze. The shadow of branches is laid across their faces. Dean closes his eyes. He is almost asleep.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhillipe,\u201d he hears her say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to make love in the woods sometime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve never done that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrange,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lies. \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have never. Is it nice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d he says.
