I met her through a distinguished French professor with a limp, Bernard Fa\u00ff, whom I met that summer at the Salzburg music festival. I used to go swimming every day in the public swimming pool and that’s where I met him. It turned out that one of his best friends was Gertrude Stein.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Water promises joy and fear. Looking at pictures of swimming is like looking at pictures of tenderness or violence\u2014the body reacts, a sensibility beyond seeing.
