Courtesy of <em>The Paris Review.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>The Paris Review<\/em> is mourning the loss of our publisher and friend, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2019\/06\/15\/susannah-hunnewell-1966-2019\/\">Susannah Hunnewell<\/a>. Over the course of her long affiliation with the magazine\u2014she began as an editorial assistant in 1989, served as the Paris editor in the early 2000s, and in 2015 became the magazine\u2019s seventh publisher\u2014Susannah conducted several iconic Writers at Work interviews. This week, we&#8217;re unlocking all of her interviews: she championed the work of Oulipo cofounder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/5734\/harry-mathews-the-art-of-fiction-no-191-harry-mathews\">Harry Mathews<\/a>, examined the literary corpus of French provocateur and novelist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6040\/michel-houellebecq-the-art-of-fiction-no-206-michel-houellebecq\">Michael Houellebecq<\/a>, and bonded with Parisian nonfiction novelist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6254\/emmanuel-carrere-the-art-of-nonfiction-no-5-emmanuel-carrere\">Emmanuel Carr\u00e8re<\/a>, who said working with Susannah \u201cleft me stunned and admiring.\u201d She&#8217;s responsible for two Art of Fiction interviews with Nobel laureates, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/5829\/kazuo-ishiguro-the-art-of-fiction-no-196-kazuo-ishiguro\">Kazuo Ishiguro<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/2280\/mario-vargas-llosa-the-art-of-fiction-no-120-mario-vargas-llosa\">Mario Vargas Llosa<\/a>, and most recently, she interviewed the translator-couple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6385\/richard-pevear-and-larissa-volokhonsky-the-art-of-translation-no-4-richard-pevear-and-larissa-volokhonsky\">Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky<\/a>. Along with these interviews, read Houellebecq\u2019s short story \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/6377\/from-submission-michel-houellebecq\">Submission<\/a>\u201d and Mathews\u2019s poem \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/4399\/the-swimmer-harry-mathews\">The Swimmer<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/2280\/mario-vargas-llosa-the-art-of-fiction-no-120-mario-vargas-llosa\">Mario Vargas Llosa, The Art of Fiction No. 120<\/a><br \/>\nIssue no. 116 (Fall 1990)<\/p>\n<p>I never get the feeling that I\u2019ve decided rationally, cold-bloodedly to write a story. On the contrary, certain events or people, sometimes dreams or readings, impose themselves suddenly and demand attention. That\u2019s why I talk so much about the importance of the purely irrational elements of literary creation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/5734\/harry-mathews-the-art-of-fiction-no-191-harry-mathews\">Harry Mathews, The Art of Fiction No. 191<\/a><br \/>\nIssue no. 180 (Spring 2007)<\/p>\n<p>I always set out to write a three-hundred-page novel, but whatever the length of the first draft, by the time I finish cutting out the deadwood it has dwindled to two-hundred-and-some pages. Except in French. Everything comes out longer in French.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/5829\/kazuo-ishiguro-the-art-of-fiction-no-196-kazuo-ishiguro\">Kazuo Ishiguro, The Art of Fiction No. 196<\/a><br \/>\nIssue no. 184 (Spring 2008)<\/p>\n<p>When you find yourself in different parts of the world, you become embarrassingly aware of the things that culturally just don\u2019t translate. Sometimes you spend four days at a time explaining a book to Danes. I don\u2019t particularly like, for example, to use brand names and other cultural reference points, not just because they don\u2019t transfer geographically. They don\u2019t transfer very well in time either. In thirty years\u2019 time, they won\u2019t mean anything.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6040\/michel-houellebecq-the-art-of-fiction-no-206-michel-houellebecq\">Michel Houellebecq, The Art of Fiction No. 206<\/a><br \/>\nIssue no. 194 (Fall 2010)<\/p>\n<p>The hardest thing about writing a novel is finding the starting point, the thing that will open it up. And even that doesn\u2019t guarantee success. I basically failed with <em>Platform<\/em>, even though tourism is an excellent point of departure for understanding the world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6254\/emmanuel-carrere-the-art-of-nonfiction-no-5-emmanuel-carrere\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emmanuel Carr\u00e8re, The Art of Nonfiction No. 5<\/a><br \/>\nIssue no. 206 (Fall 2013)<\/p>\n<p>Today still, when I\u2019m not working on anything, I\u2019ll take a notebook, and for a few hours a day I\u2019ll just write whatever comes, about my life, my wife, the elections, trying not to censor myself. That\u2019s the real problem obviously\u2014\u201cwithout denaturalizing or hypocrisy.\u201d Without being afraid of what is shameful or what you consider uninteresting, not worthy of being written. It\u2019s the same principle behind psychoanalysis. It\u2019s just as hard to do and just as worth it, in my opinion. Everything you think is worth writing. I think it\u2019s a very important part of translating.
