The formal chaos of social interaction\u2014at a dinner party and in a crowded Moroccan-themed night club\u2014comes alive in the book\u2019s riotous melding of clothing and decor patterns and\u00a0luminous, vivid color. I read it straight through; its gorgeous pages are burned into my brain. \u2014<strong>Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This Wednesday, I attended a demonstration for the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Modernist-Cuisine-Art-Science-Cooking\/dp\/0982761007\/\">Modernist Cuisine<\/a><\/em>, which could have only been written by a crazy person. Or, in this case, several crazy people. Nathan Myhrvold, Chris Young, and Maxime Bilet have written five volumes covering everything from sous vide to shit. As <em>The New Yorker<\/em>\u2019s John Lancaster <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/arts\/critics\/atlarge\/2011\/03\/21\/110321crat_atlarge_lanchester\">puts it<\/a>: \u201cIn its packed state, it weighs forty-six pounds. The scale and ambition of the project\u2014and maybe at least one of the egos behind it\u2014are Pharaonic.\u201d\u00a0At the demonstration, I was served a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/thessaly\/5554368835\/in\/photostream\/\">striped omelette<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/amandahesser\/status\/50761879374667776\">like Amanda Hesser<\/a>, I wish that I had booked it to Myhrvold\u2019s headquarters in Bellevue, Washington,\u00a0five years ago and joined the effort. \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Edmund White introduced British readers to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/books\/2011\/jan\/12\/edmund-white-top-10-new-york-books\">his top ten books about New York<\/a>. I enjoyed the list very much\u2014it featured the expected classics alongside neglected curiosities\u2014but couldn\u2019t help feeling that he\u2019d missed a trick by omitting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Collected-Works-Journal-Jazz-1954-2001\/dp\/0312270089\/\">the complete writings of Whitney Balliett<\/a>,  who was the jazz critic at\u00a0<em>The New Yorker <\/em>for fifty years. Balliett\u2019s tastes lean a little too much toward the conservative\u2014goodness knows what he\u2019d make of my predilection for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/2010-07-06\/music\/brooklyn-s-noise-scene-catches-up-to-oneohtrix-point-never\/\">this kind of nonsense<\/a>\u2014but the perfectly weighted cadences of his prose are as tight and agile as the rhythm section of the slickest combo around. Check out his profiles of Big Sid Catlett, Ben Webster, and Ornette Coleman in particular. This, for me, is the sound of New York. \u2014<strong>Jonathan Gharraie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->I picked up Thisbe Nissen\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Good-People-New-York\/dp\/0375411453\">The Good People of New York<\/a><\/em> and hopped on the subway. When I got off the train, I kept reading and walking\u2014almost walking into a nice-looking\u00a0gentlemen\u00a0with a briefcase. (Sorry!) \u2014<strong>T. L. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the start of Saul Bellow\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sammlers-Penguin-Twentieth-Century-Classics\/dp\/014018936X\">Mr. Sammler Planet<\/a>, \u201c<\/em>Mr. Artur Sammler with his bushy eye took in the books and papers of his West Side bedroom and suspected strongly that they were the wrong books, the wrong papers.\u201d\u00a0This elderly soul, who has spent his whole life with precisely these books and these papers, seems at the brink of a moment of self-discovery. But then he continues: \u201cIn a way it did not matter much to a man of seventy-plus, and at leisure. You had to be a crank to insist on being right. Being right was largely a matter of explanations.\u201d\u00a0This is Sammler\u2019s intellectual life: largely still and almost completely resigned. The book, though, is bright, strange, and more than mildly paranoid\u2014a thoroughly intriguing read. \u2014<strong>Rosalind Parry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/books\/2010\/apr\/03\/hermione-lee-penelope-fitzgerald\">classic essay<\/a> on the art of reading: Hermione Lee visits Penelope Fitzgerald\u2019s library. \u2014<strong>J.
