Tyree Daye is a poet from Youngsville, North Carolina. He is the author of two poetry collections: River Hymns, <\/em>the 2017 APR\/Honickman First Book Prize winner, and Cardinal,<\/em> forthcoming from Copper Canyon Press in 2020. <\/em>Daye is a 2017 Ruth Lilly finalist and a Cave Canem fellow. Daye\u2019s work has been published in Prairie Schooner<\/em>, the New York Times, <\/em>and Nashville Review. <\/em>He won the 2019 Palm Beach Poetry Festival Langston Hughes Fellowship and is the 2019 Diana and Simon Raab Writer-in-Residence and a 2019 Kate Tufts finalist.<\/p>\n

\u201cSay River, See River\u201d<\/p>\n

I threw up the river last night<\/p>\n

trout already gutted\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0salamanders rocking<\/p>\n

between the books on my bedroom floor
\nthen the river stood up\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 bowlegged it walked<\/p>\n

like it was drunk\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 like it was an uncle<\/p>\n

so I followed the dizzy river
\ninto my mother\u2019s backyard<\/p>\n

watched it fall and flood the houses <\/p>\n

pick itself up\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0laugh it off<\/p>\n

we splashed past where the men<\/p>\n

slept on the ground their low eyes always<\/p>\n

where they laid at night \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I wondered
\nif they counted the stars together<\/p>\n

until it turned into a Lightnin\u2019 Hopkins\u2019 song
\n21 22 my black dog blues<\/em><\/p>\n

if they played Spades for planets
\ntoasted Wild Irish Rose to the Seven Sisters<\/p>\n

the river took me to a big graveyard
\nwe didn\u2019t cut through<\/p>\n

funneled around
\nran a damp finger along the fence<\/p>\n

the river would catch a name we passed the straight stones
\nand every so often say one<\/p>\n

the dead heard the wet voice
