On Tuesday, April 12,\u00a0The Paris Review<\/em> will single out two young writers at its Spring Revel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n

April Ayers Lawson<\/a> will receive the Review<\/em>\u2019s Plimpton Prize for \u201cVirgin<\/a>,\u201d which appeared in our fall issue and marked Lawson’s national debut.<\/p>\n

Elif Batuman<\/a> will receive the first-ever Terry Southern Prize for Humor for \u201cMy Twelve-Hour Blind Date, with Dostoevsky<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0her five-part account of a marathon theatrical performance on Governor\u2019s Island. The series appeared last July on The Paris Review<\/em> Daily.<\/p>\n

The Plimpton Prize for Fiction is a $10,000 award given to a new voice published in The Paris Review<\/em>. The prize is named for the Review<\/em>\u2019s longtime editor George Plimpton and reflects his commitment to discovering new writers of exceptional merit. The winner is chosen by the Board of the Review. <\/em>This year’s prize will be presented by Ann Beattie<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Terry Southern Prize for Humor is a $5,000 award recognizing wit, panache, and sprezzatura in work published\u00a0by The Paris Review<\/em> or online by the Daily. <\/a>Perhaps best known as the screenwriter behind Dr. Strangelove<\/em> and Easy Rider<\/em>, Terry Southern<\/a> was also a\u00a0satirical novelist, a pioneering New Journalist, and a driving force behind the early Paris Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s winner of the Terry Southern Prize was chosen by a panel of three judges: critic Sam Anderson of The New York Times<\/em>, editor Chris Jackson of Spiegel & Grau, and writer Fran Lebowitz<\/a>. Lebowitz will present the prize.<\/p>\n

And, of course, the honoree of this year\u2019s Revel is James Salter<\/a>. Robert Redford will present Salter with the 2011 Hadada, the Review<\/em>\u2019s lifetime achievement award recognizing a \u201cstrong and unique contribution to literature.\u201d Previous recipients of the Hadada include John Ashbery, Joan Didion, Norman Mailer, Peter Matthiessen, George Plimpton (posthumously), Barney Rosset, Philip Roth, and William Styron.<\/p>\n
