When autumn approached, when there would be a rather strong wind, and the fishing barges would have to sail through rough weather, we would always be glad when they were at last anchored, and my mother would say to someone among the fishermen who\u2019d gone out: \u201cAh, bravo, you\u2019ve come through rough weather\u201d; and he would answer: \u201cMadam, you know, we always sail with Charon at our side.\u201d That\u2019s moving to me. Perhaps when I wrote about Ulysses in\u00a0\u201cUpon a Foreign Verse\u201d\u2014perhaps I had in mind somebody like that fisherman. Those \u201ccertain old sailors from my childhood\u201d who would recite the\u00a0Erotokritos<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I can\u2019t really remember how I met Tommy. I recollect him first as a smooth cloche of shiny light brown hair sporting the slender plume of a cowlick, a head bent over a book in study hall belonging to someone I\u2019d heard was captain of the tennis team, leader of the Crowd and Sally\u2019s steady; then, without transition, he was my friend and he was struggling to explain to me his theory about Sartre\u2019s\u00a0Nausea<\/em>\u00a0as we kicked our way through autumn leaves. \u201cUh \u2026\u00a0uh \u2026\u00a0\u201d he was crying out on a loud, high note, a sustained nasal sound, as he stopped walking and held a finger up. Then his small, blue eyes, straining to see an idea in the distance, blinked, glanced smoothly up and down. The glitter of prophecy faded. He shrugged: \u201cLost it.\u201d He exposed his palms and then pocketed his hands in his trousers. I held my breath and counted ten before I offered my soft, apologetic suggestion: \u201cBut aren\u2019t you really saying that Sartre thinks Man is \u2026\u00a0\u201d and I filled in the blank with the closest approximation I could invent, not of Sartre\u2019s thought but of Tommy\u2019s dubious interpretation of it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
