All thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/12\/18\/books\/18montaigne.html\">Sarah Bakewell<\/a> (who <a href=\"http:\/\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/03\/10\/jennifer-egan-and-isabel-wilkerson-win-national-book-critics-circle-awards\/?smid=tw-nytimes&amp;seid=auto\">won<\/a> a National Book Critics Circle Award last night for her biography of Montaigne: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/cgi-bin\/biblio\/74-9781590514252-0\">How To Live<\/a><\/em>). \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Several years ago I read Vladimir Sorokin\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio?isbn=9781590173862\">Ice<\/a><\/em> and found its matter-of-fact sci-fi narrative intriguing but its conclusion quite disappointing. Turns out it\u2019s the second book in a trilogy, which, thankfully, NYRB has published in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio?isbn=9781590173862\">a single volume<\/a>\u2014the way it ought to be read. I haven\u2019t reached the end yet, but so far it\u2019s wonderfully weird. \u2014<strong>Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reviews of Margaux Fragosos\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/1-9780374277628-1\">Tiger, Tiger<\/a><\/em> gave me the chills. It\u2019s a memoir of her relationship with Peter, a pedophile forty-four years her senior. When a copy of the book was slipped on my desk this week, I had to pick it up. \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As an undergraduate, I remember catching my necromantic tutor in Old Icelandic obliviously reciting poems from the language on the top deck of the city bus. This week, I\u2019ve been putting those extracurricular lessons to use by whipping out Basil Bunting\u2019s <em>Collected Poems <\/em>on the subway. It doesn\u2019t take long for the short, incantatory lines of \u201cBriggflatts\u201d\u2014studded with monosyllabic words that Bunting excavated from Anglo-Saxon and his regional Northumbrian dialect\u2014to achieve the twin effect of making me forget my surroundings and baffling my fellow passengers. I mean, what on earth is an <em>oxter<\/em>? \u2014<strong>Jonathan Gharraie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Catholic and Jewish art rage is impossible to ignore. Orthodox Jews <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artinfo.com\/news\/story\/37185\/no-nudes-nu-orthodox-community-clashes-with-les-gallerist-over-xxx-art\/?utm_source=nlda&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter\">object<\/a> to the \u201cPornucopia\u201d show on the Lower East Side, while\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artinfo.com\/news\/story\/37172\/virgin-mary-art-sets-off-a-furor-in-france\/\">repurposed Virgin Mary statuettes<\/a> are causing a stir in France. \u00a0\u2014<strong>Angela Melamud<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve just come across this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/books\/2011\/mar\/11\/hg-wells-david-lodge\" target=\"_blank\">illuminating essay<\/a> on the challenges of writing biofiction\u00a0by David Lodge, whose latest novel\u00a0dramatizes the life of\u00a0H. G. Wells, \u201ca prophet of the sexual revolution\u00a0[who]\u00a0believed in free love and practiced it tirelessly.\u201d \u2014<strong>J. G. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the reading for the National Book Critic Circle nominees, Kay Ryan read aloud a particularly\u00a0enchanting poem called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hopstudios.com\/nep\/unvarnished\/overheard\/5483\/\">Stardust<\/a>.\u201d \u201cI wanted to read this,\u201d\u00a0she explained onstage, \u201cbecause there are so many writers here tonight.\u201d\u2014<strong>T.
