As Matt Levin, who spent long hours at the Morgan Library listening to the archival audio of our Writers at Work interviews for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/podcast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our podcast<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2018\/03\/12\/listening-to-harold-blooms-laugh-and-delillos-bronx-accent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote recently<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The four-beat leitmotif that George Plimpton conjures out of the name <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/4310\/vladimir-nabokov-the-art-of-fiction-no-40-vladimir-nabokov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nabokov<\/a> never fails to delight me in its voluptuousness\u2014N\u01dd (pause) Beau (pronunciation drawn out like an arch gossip columnist) Kavv (the fricative subtle, fading away like a comet tail). It corresponds perfectly to the wily quote that Nabokov himself gives about the pronunciation of his name\u2014\u201cMy New England ear is not offended by the long, elegant middle <em>o<\/em> of Nabokov as delivered in American academies. The awful \u2018Na-bah-kov\u2019 is a despicable gutterism.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the recording below, there are precisely zero despicable gutterisms to be found:<\/p>\n<p><iframe
