Every year, during the first week of the month, we celebrate <em>The Paris Review <\/em>at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2018\/03\/07\/isabella-hammad-wins-2018-plimpton-prize-david-sedaris-wins-terry-southern-prize\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Spring Revel<\/a>. This year, we gathered friends, fans, and family to honor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6303\/joy-williams-the-art-of-fiction-no-223-joy-williams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Joy Williams<\/strong><\/a> and sixty-five years of the magazine. <strong>John Waters<\/strong>, the legendary mustachioed auteur, was the self-described \u201cmonster of ceremonies,\u201d escorting guests through an evening that recognized the emerging and established writers who have found a home at <em>The Paris Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The stars at Cipriani rivaled those across the street on Grand Central\u2019s ceiling, as <strong>Don DeLillo<\/strong>, <strong>Radhika Jones<\/strong>, <strong>John Waters<\/strong>, <strong>David Sedaris<\/strong>, <strong>Patricia Marx<\/strong>,<strong> Tina Brown<\/strong>, <strong>Sir Harry Evans<\/strong>,<strong> Michael Cunningham<\/strong>,<strong> Lesley Stahl<\/strong>, <strong>Morgan Entrekin<\/strong>, <strong>Lewis Lapham<\/strong>,<strong> Hailey Gates<\/strong>, <strong>Ellie Goulding<\/strong>,<strong> Amor Towles<\/strong>,<strong> Dana Spiotta<\/strong>,<strong> Joanna Coles<\/strong>, <strong>Henry Finder<\/strong>, <strong>Emma Cline<\/strong>, and <strong>Kwame Anthony Appiah<\/strong> toasted with\u00a0<em>Review <\/em>readers old and new.<\/p>\n<p>Guests hushed to the sound of <strong>George Plimpton<\/strong> interviewing <strong>Eudora Welty<\/strong>, a snippet from the first season of our podcast. As the crickets of Jackson, Mississippi, faded away, our publisher,\u00a0<strong>Susannah Hunnewell<\/strong>, toasted <em>Paris Review <\/em>comrades who had died this year, including <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2018\/04\/02\/drue-heinz-1915-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Drue Heinz<\/a><\/strong>,<strong> Bokara Legendre<\/strong>, and <strong>John Ashbery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The first award of the evening bridged the <em>Review<\/em>\u2019s past and present. Named for our founding editor George Plimpton, the Plimpton Prize is presented each year to a new voice in fiction. The novelist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/6323\/locals-david-gates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Gates<\/a><\/strong> presented <strong>Isabella Hammad<\/strong> the prize for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/7035\/mr-canaan-isabella-hammad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mr. Can\u2019aan<\/a>,\u201d from our Fall 2017\u00a0issue.\u00a0Her story, which begins on the banks of the Jordan River a week after the Six-Day War, immerses the reader in the inheritance of loss passed through generations of Palestinians. In her speech, Hammad noted that the prize had brought her more than one kind of encouragement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Over the last few years since I\u2019ve been living in New York, the conversations in this country surrounding the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands and lives have definitely been changing \u2026 This should not distract us from the reality that the situation there has not improved. In fact, it has become palpably worse. Nevertheless, at a time when it is often difficult to feel hopeful about the future, that a story about Palestinians should win a prize like this does help me to feel a bit of hope.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/letters-essays\/7055\/letter-from-emerald-isle-david-sedaris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>David Sedaris<\/strong><\/a>, known for spinning his own sadness into impossibly funny yarns, was awarded the Terry Southern Prize for Humor by the incomparable <strong>Patricia Marx<\/strong>, who threatened to upstage her honoree on the microphone as she explained her love for his work:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There are plenty of writers whose work I like, but with those writers\u2014let\u2019s just say I didn\u2019t read <em>Crime and Punishment<\/em> and wish I could visit the prison in Siberia and sleep on the bed of nails with Dostoyevsky.\u00a0Emily Dickinson, Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Plath\u2014de<em>pressed<\/em>. It\u2019s different with David Sedaris. You read a story about his family or his boyfriend, Hugh, or even a line of his like, \u201cAs bad a dresser as I am, anything beats being judged by my character,\u201d and you know you need to meet this writer immediately.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As Cipriani\u2019s legion of waiters noiselessly disappeared dinner, <strong>John Waters<\/strong> praised <strong>Joy Williams<\/strong> for her lifetime of characteristically uncompromising writing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ms. Williams is a desert rat, and I mean that as a compliment. She calls wild animal trophy hunters psychopaths, and I agree with her. And wishes Earth First would rise again, though she realizes they were branded terrorists and anarchists by the FBI. You could say the same for her writing. It confuses our values and destroys moral superiority. \u201cShe\u2019s probably not for everybody,\u201d the <em>New York Times<\/em> once warned. But who are these \u201ceverybody\u201d she\u2019s not for? The literary deplorables, that\u2019s who. If you can\u2019t appreciate Joy Williams\u2019s writing, you have no business being a reader. Get outta here, go to a movie or something!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For all the hard edges and vacant horizons in her work, <strong>Williams<\/strong> warmly accepted the award and turned her appreciation to the magazine, extolling,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The Paris Review<\/em> appears to me a strong, glittering chain of continuity, a continuity of artistic excellence and discovery and verve, bridging the years, harboring all manner of marvels and singularities. I\u2019m so happy to be honored here at this literary revel of revels, on the list, a very special list. I will tell you, I feel a churchy exultation and joy right now. Hadada, hadada, hadada.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Our interim editor,<strong> Nicole Rudick<\/strong>, brought the evening to a close and the guests close to tears as she expressed her pride in the magazine\u2019s potential and encouraged the audience to imagine that every Revel could be the best one yet.
