On April 3, <\/em>The Paris Review\u00a0will honor Joy Williams<\/a>\u00a0with the\u00a0Hadada Award<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for lifetime achievement at our\u00a0annual gala,\u00a0the Spring Revel<\/a><\/span>. In anticipation, we\u2019ve asked the renowned artist Brad Holland<\/a> to illustrate five stories from her 2013 collection,\u00a0<\/em>Ninety-Nine Stories of God. Take a look at the other stories and illustrations that appeared this week<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Passing Clouds was the brand of cigarette favored by the great English contralto Kathleen Ferrier. According to one of her early teachers, her magnificent voice was attributed to \u201ca wonderful cavity at the back of her throat.\u201d This was the only explanation given for the purity and power of her voice.<\/p>\n

Near the end of her brief life, Ferrier sang Mahler\u2019s symphony \u201cThe Song of the Earth.\u201d We die, but life is fresh, eternally fresh, was Mahler\u2019s ecstatic conviction. Nature renews herself year after year … for ever and ever.<\/p>\n

Ferrier was in tears when she concluded \u201cThe Song of the Earth,\u201d so distraught that she omitted the final ewig<\/em>, the final ever.<\/p>\n
