Tommy Pico, who \u201cwrites poetry of rare brilliance, assured in form and forceful in its interrogation of myth and cultural expectations and self,\u201d is the author of\u00a0IRL<\/em>,\u00a0Nature Poem<\/em>, and\u00a0Junk<\/em>, which will be published by Tin House Books in May.\u00a0Originally from the Viejas Indian reservation of the Kumeyaay nation, he now lives in Brooklyn, where he cocurates the reading series Poets with Attitude (PWA) with Morgan Parker, cohosts the podcast Food 4 Thot<\/em>, and is a contributing editor at Literary Hub<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Onstage I\u2019m a mess
\nof tremor and sweat
\nI must have some face-blindness? bc I can\u2019t tell the difference btwn the \u2028faces
\nof attention and danger<\/p>\n

The gift of panic is clarity\u2014repeat the known quantities:<\/i><\/p>\n

Today is Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Wednesday is a turkey burger.<\/p>\n

My throat is full of survivors.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Science says trauma cd be passed down, molecular scar tissue, DNA
\ncavorting w\/war and escape routes and yr dad\u2019s bad dad<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve inherited this idea to disappear
\nOh but you\u2019re a natural performer<\/i><\/p>\n

In the mid 1800s, California wd pay $5 for the head of an NDN and 25\u00a2
\nper scalp\u2014man, woman, or child. The state was reimbursed by the feds<\/p>\n

When yr descended from a clever self adept at evading an occupying
\nforce, when contact meant another swath of sick cousins, another

I can\u2019t write a nature poem bc that conversation happens in the Hall of
\nSouth American Peoples in the American Museum of Natural History<\/p>\n

btwn two white ladies in buttery shawls as they pass a display case of
\n\u201ctraditional\u201d garb from one tribe or another it doesn\u2019t really matter to anyone<\/p>\n

and that word Natural <\/i>in Natural History<\/i> hangs
\nalso History<\/i>
\nalso Peoples<\/i>
\nhangs as in frames<\/p>\n

it\u2019s horrible how their culture was destroyed<\/i><\/p>\n

as if in some reckless storm<\/p>\n

but thank god we were able to save some of these artifacts\u2014history is so
\n<\/i>important. Will you look at this metalwork? I could cry\u2014<\/i><\/p>\n

Look, I\u2019m sure you really do just want to wear those dream catcher
\nearrings. They\u2019re beautiful. I\u2019m sure you don\u2019t mean any harm, I\u2019m sure
\nyou don\u2019t really think abt us at all. I\u2019m sure you don\u2019t understand the
\nconcept of off-limits. But what if by not wearing a headdress in yr music
\nvideo or changing yr damn mascot and perhaps adding .05% of personal
\nannoyance to yr life for the twenty minutes it lasts, the 103 young ppl
\nwho tried to kill themselves on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation over
\nthe past four months wanted to live 50% more<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t want to be seen, generally, I\u2019m a natural introvert, n I def don\u2019t
\nwant to be seen by white ladies in buttery shawls,
\nbut I will literally die if I don\u2019t scream<\/p>\n

An NDN poem must reference alcoholism, like
\nI started drinking again after Mike Brown and Sandra Bland and Charleston
\n<\/i>I felt so underwater it made no sense to keep dry<\/i><\/p>\n

I feel dry as California
\nwhere I somehow managed to thrive in a climate of drought for thousands
\nof years w\/o draining the state, yet somehow we<\/i> were primitive?<\/p>\n

Consequence shapes behavior. So does the absence of consequences.<\/p>\n

America says some ppl are raised guilty. Some are innocent of everything.
\n<\/i>Some ppl will always have to be good sports remain calm <\/i><\/p>\n
