The state was reimbursed by the feds<\/p>\n<p>When yr descended from a clever self adept at evading an occupying<br \/>\nforce, when contact meant another swath of sick cousins, another<br \/>\ncosmology snuffed, another stolen sister<\/p>\n<p>and the water and the blood and the blood and the blood and the<br \/>\nblood and the blood<\/p>\n<p>u flush under the hot lights<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t write a nature poem bc that conversation happens in the Hall of<br \/>\nSouth American Peoples in the American Museum of Natural History<\/p>\n<p>btwn two white ladies in buttery shawls as they pass a display case of<br \/>\n\u201ctraditional\u201d garb from one tribe or another it doesn\u2019t really matter to anyone<\/p>\n<p>and that word <i>Natural <\/i>in <i>Natural History<\/i> hangs<br \/>\nalso <i>History<\/i><br \/>\nalso <i>Peoples<\/i><br \/>\nhangs as in frames<\/p>\n<p><i>it\u2019s horrible how their culture was destroyed<\/i><\/p>\n<p>as if in some reckless storm<\/p>\n<p><i>but thank god we were able to save some of these artifacts\u2014history is so<br \/>\n<\/i><i>important. Will you look at this metalwork? I could cry\u2014<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Look, I\u2019m sure you really do just want to wear those dream catcher<br \/>\nearrings. They\u2019re beautiful. I\u2019m sure you don\u2019t mean any harm, I\u2019m sure<br \/>\nyou don\u2019t really think abt us at all. I\u2019m sure you don\u2019t understand the<br \/>\nconcept of off-limits. But what if by not wearing a headdress in yr music<br \/>\nvideo or changing yr damn mascot and perhaps adding .05% of personal<br \/>\nannoyance to yr life for the twenty minutes it lasts, the 103 young ppl<br \/>\nwho tried to kill themselves on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation over<br \/>\nthe past four months wanted to live 50% more<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t want to be seen, generally, I\u2019m a natural introvert, n I def don\u2019t<br \/>\nwant to be seen by white ladies in buttery shawls,<br \/>\nbut I will literally die if I don\u2019t scream<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>An NDN poem must reference alcoholism, like<br \/>\n<i>I started drinking again after Mike Brown and Sandra Bland and Charleston<br \/>\n<\/i><i>I felt so underwater it made no sense to keep dry<\/i><\/p>\n<p>In my poem, I cdn\u2019t get out of bed for two days after Mike Brown and<br \/>\nSandra Bland and Charleston<\/p>\n<p>me n sweatpants n a new york slice<\/p>\n<p>I feel dry as California<br \/>\nwhere I somehow managed to thrive in a climate of drought for thousands<br \/>\nof years w\/o draining the state, yet somehow <i>we<\/i> were primitive?<\/p>\n<p>Consequence shapes behavior. So does the absence of consequences.<\/p>\n<p>America says <i>some ppl are raised guilty. Some are innocent of everything.<br \/>\n<\/i><i>Some ppl will always have to be good sports remain calm <\/i><\/p>\n<p>Remain Calm<\/p>\n<p>Remain Calm<\/p>\n<p>Who even wants to go into space? I fucking hate traveling<br \/>\nI\u2019m a weirdo NDN faggot and frankly that limits my prospects<br \/>\nplus it sucks\u2014watching the couples and the string lights<br \/>\nslow-dance in Monbijoupark, to realize<br \/>\ndespite history<br \/>\nmy own abrupt American body<br \/>\nAmerica that green ghost, been after me for at least a couple hundred<br \/>\nyears somehow once convinced me to do its dirty work for it sharp in a<br \/>\nwarm bath<\/p>\n<p>Sun breaks upon the Pacific Northwest.
