His plays include\u00a0<em>Nat Turner in Jerusalem<\/em>;\u00a0<em>Dontrell, Who Kissed the<\/em> Sea;<em>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>The Wind and the Breeze<\/em>. His work has recently been commissioned or developed by The Public Theater, Arena Stage, Williamstown Theatre Festival, McCarter Theatre, NYTW and The Lark.\u00a0Davis received his M.F.A. from Indiana University and B.F.A. from the University of Illinois.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p><em>An excerpt from<\/em> Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea<em>:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>DONTRELL wakes from a vivid dream. He picks up a minicassette recorder, turns it on and speaks into it. In doing so, he addresses the audience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">DONTRELL<\/p>\n<p>Captain\u2019s log:<br \/>\nFuture generations, whoever finds this: I hope it finds you well.<br \/>\nThis Dontrell Jones the Third, of Baltimore.<br \/>\nSpittin\u2019 to you live through space and time.<br \/>\nAs your advanced technologies and mental-intuitive capacities may or may not allow you to decipher,<br \/>\nI\u2019m in my PJs right now.<br \/>\nT-shirt and mesh. That\u2019s how I rest.<br \/>\nBut If I had known last night what I would dream!?<br \/>\n\u2026\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">COMPANY [DANIELLE]<br \/>\n(Heartbeats)<\/p>\n<p>Bum-bum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">COMPANY [SHEA]<\/p>\n<p>Pitter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">COMPANY [MOM]<\/p>\n<p>Patter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">DONTRELL<\/p>\n<p>If I had known last night what I would dream\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">ALL COMPANY<\/p>\n<p>Heart-beat.<br \/>\nHeart-beat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">DONTRELL<\/p>\n<p>I woulda put on a suit y\u2019all, I\u2019m tellin\u2019 you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">COMPANY [ERIKA]<\/p>\n<p>Deep breath.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">COMPANY [ROBBY]<\/p>\n<p>One more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">COMPANY [DAD]<\/p>\n<p>One more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">DONTRELL<\/p>\n<p>Just dreamt of a captive African, name unknown,<br \/>\nOne among a mass of tight-packed bodies,<br \/>\nSwaying with the tide of the Atlantic<br \/>\nIn the womb-like darkness of a slaver\u2019s vessel.<br \/>\nSaid African is alert. A cunning mind.<br \/>\nI hear his shackles opening. I hear<br \/>\nA thud as his feet meet the floor &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">ALL COMPANY<\/p>\n<p>(lightly)<\/p>\n<p>(thud.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">DONTRELL<\/p>\n<p>And I can see him now: He has my father\u2019s face.<br \/>\nI speak to him: \u201cI am Dontrell Jones the Third<br \/>\nWhat is your name?\u201d At this, he walks away.<br \/>\nI trail his footsteps. He squeezes through a doorway.<br \/>\nI follow him: and we are among the women.<br \/>\nHe taps one on the shoulder, she stirs<br \/>\nHe tells her his name<br \/>\n&#8211; This dreamer did not hear it &#8211;<br \/>\nShe tells him hers<br \/>\n&#8211; Again, too low a whisper &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>For awhile they are silent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">COMPANY [MOM]<\/p>\n<p>Silent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">COMPANY [DAD]<\/p>\n<p>Silent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">COMPANY [DANIELLE]<\/p>\n<p>Silent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">DONTRELL<\/p>\n<p>She speaks to him again.<br \/>\nHe climbs on top of her.<br \/>\nShe spreads her legs as best she can in her little cubby.<br \/>\nThey intertwine as best they can.<br \/>\nThey find each other\u2019s rhythm.<br \/>\nHer fields cultivate themselves, and a little seed is nourished there.<br \/>\nThey lie together. Man, woman and child.<br \/>\nIn darkness and the stench of the belly of the ship,<br \/>\nFloating on the freshness of the new moon sea.<br \/>\nBefore sunrise, the man rises.<br \/>\nHe climbs through a small hatchway to the deck.
