Named after our longtime editor George Plimpton, it commemorates his zeal for discovering new writers.\u00a0This year\u2019s Plimpton Prize will be presented by\u00a0the novelist\u00a0<strong>David Gates<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0<strong>Isabella Hammad<\/strong>, for her story \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/7035\/mr-canaan-isabella-hammad\" target=\"_blank\">Mr. Can\u2019aan<\/a>,\u201d from our Fall 2017\u00a0issue. \u201cMr. Can\u2019aan\u201d\u00a0opens on the banks of the Jordan a week after the Six-Day War. It follows the friendship of Sam and\u00a0Jibril from their\u00a0first meeting at the American University of Beirut\u2019s Monopoly Club (\u201cSam was the shoe, Jibril the top hat\u201d) and into middle age.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hammad is a British Palestinian writer born in the UK. She first came to the United States for graduate school, with, as she says, \u201cvague ambitions of becoming an academic.\u201d But instead, she\u00a0made her way to the Middle East for a year to begin work on a novel set in Palestine during the British Mandate period. That\u00a0novel, <em>The Parisian<\/em>, will be published next year. Photo:\u00a0Ingrid Christie.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Terry Southern Prize for Humor is a $5,000 award honoring humor, wit, and sprezzatura in work from either\u00a0<em>The Paris Review<\/em>\u00a0or the\u00a0<em>Daily.<\/em>\u00a0It\u2019s named for\u00a0Terry Southern,\u00a0a satirical novelist and pioneering New Journalist perhaps best known as the screenwriter behind\u00a0<em>Dr. Strangelove<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Easy Rider<\/em>. Southern was a driving force behind the early\u00a0<em>Paris Review<\/em>,<em>\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2015\/12\/17\/no-stranger-to-excess\/\" target=\"_blank\">as is amply demonstrated in his correspondence<\/a>. This year\u2019s Southern Prize will be presented by <em>New Yorker<\/em>\u00a0staff writer and former <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em>\u00a0contributor<strong>\u00a0Patricia Marx\u00a0<\/strong>to\u00a0<strong>David Sedaris<\/strong>. Sedaris\u2019s\u00a0first\u00a0essay for\u00a0the\u00a0<em>Review<\/em>,\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2017\/06\/05\/number-reasons-ive-depressed-lately\/\" target=\"_blank\">A Number of Reasons I\u2019ve Been Depressed Lately<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0was published on <em>The Paris Review Daily<\/em> last June. It\u00a0begins with an audience member at a Greek literary festival asking Sedaris, \u201cWhat do you think of Donald Trump?\u201d and only goes downhill\u2014or, if measured\u00a0by painful laughter, up\u2014from there. Sedaris\u2019s second essay, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/letters-essays\/7055\/letter-from-emerald-isle-david-sedaris\" target=\"_blank\">Letter from\u00a0Emerald Isle<\/a>,\u201d published in the\u00a0Fall issue<a href=\"https:\/\/store.theparisreview.org\/collections\/back-issues\/products\/the-paris-review-no-222-fall-2017\" target=\"_blank\">,<\/a>\u00a0weighs the pros and cons of communicating with the dead.<\/p>\n<p>Sedaris is the author of\u00a0nine books, including <em>Me Talk Pretty One Day<\/em> and <em>Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk<\/em>; his tenth, <em>Calypso<\/em>, will be published in\u00a0May. He is a regular contributor to <em>The New Yorker<\/em> and BBC Radio 4. He lives in England.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p>Recent winners of the Plimpton Prize include David Szalay, Wells Tower, Alexia Arthurs, Ottessa Moshfegh, and Emma Cline; Southern Prize winners include Chris Bachelder, Elif Batuman, Mark Leyner, Vanessa Davis, and Ben Lerner.
