All images courtesy Museum of Fine Arts, Boston<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">For most of human history, transmitting an image quickly and across long\u00a0distances was either costly or impossible.<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> Enter, at the turn of the twentieth century, the humble postcard: c<\/span><span class=\"s3\">heap to produce, widely available, and inexpensive to buy and mail, postcards allowed messages and images to travel farther and faster than they ever had before. Before\u00a0the advent of World War I, postcards were already flooding the German mail system at the rate of nearly five million per day; after the war began in earnest, that rate almost doubled. In\u00a0its extraordinary popularity, the postcard also provided political actors with a new and powerful tool of persuasion. During the era of the world wars, propaganda producers\u2014from governments to publishers to resistance movements\u2014took advantage of the ubiquitous\u00a0form to further their own political and ideological agendas. A selection of those postcards, culled from a collection published by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in December titled <\/span><\/em><span class=\"s3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artbook.com\/9780878467631.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"s1\">The Propaganda Front: Postcards of the Era of World Wars<\/span><\/a><\/span><em><span class=\"s3\">, appears below.
