Highly recommended for the juvenile set. \u2014<strong>Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, I don\u2019t know why, I want to read short stories\u2014but like, a bunch of short stories. This week I\u2019ve gone back to Joy Williams\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Honored-Guest-Stories-Joy-Williams\/dp\/1400095522\/\">Honored Guest<\/a><\/em> and sampled Justin Taylor\u2019s first collection, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Everything-Here-Best-Thing-Ever\/dp\/0061881813\/\">Everything Here Is the Best Thing Ever<\/a><\/em>. \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nathan Heller has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2285533\">beautiful essay<\/a> in <em>Slate<\/em> about stuttering: \u201cAt 3, those sentences first met with some resistance on my tongue, the way a car moves off asphalt, onto dirt\u2014and then, finally, across rocks that jolt the tires and make it hard to track where you are headed. Today, I am still being jolted, and the jagged terrain behind bears the track marks of my own innumerable small humiliations.\u201d \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I started the week with this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/lifeandstyle\/2011\/feb\/20\/hisham-matar-once-upon-a-life\">fantastic piece of reluctant Hemingway-ese<\/a> by Libyan novelist Hisham Matar and then felt compelled to reread his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/books\/2010\/jan\/16\/hisham-matar-father-libyan-jail\">rueful, angry, but ultimately dignified sliver of memoir, from last year, about his father\u2019s abduction<\/a>. His consummate poise attests to an extraordinary imaginative stamina in the most difficult of circumstances, but there are moments from that earlier piece where he almost anticipates the tumult and excitement of the past few weeks: \u201cThis is tremendous news. Tremendous in the way a storm or flood can be tremendous. Uncanny how reality presses against that precious quiet place of dreaming. As if life is jealous of fiction.\u201d That <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Anatomy-Disappearance-Novel-Hisham-Matar\/dp\/0385340443\">new novel<\/a> can\u2019t come quickly enough! \u2014<strong>Jonathan Gharraie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><em>The Observer <\/em>has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.observer.com\/http:\/%252Fwww.observer.com\/2011\/daily-transom\/whos-line-it-anyway-fact-checking-new-yorker-poetry%3Futm_medium%3Dpartial-text%2526utm_campa\">very fun story<\/a> about how <em>The New Yorker<\/em>\u2019s fact-checking and poetry departments get along. A line from Michael Robbins\u2019s poem reads, \u201cThe idiot Swedes do a number on me\/ They invent refrigeration and sleep in shifts.\u201d\u00a0To which the poetry editor Paul Muldoon responds, \u201cIf it\u2019s important to you to know that the fridge, strictly speaking, was not invented in Sweden then here we have one piece of information. If by the line \u2018the Swedes invented the fridge\u2019\u00a0you mean that storage of spoilable food in a cold climate might be said as invented in the frigid climate of Sweden, then that\u2019s also fine. It is and is not a fact.\u201d\u00a0\u2014<strong>T. L. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I just finished Daphne Miller\u2019s <em>The Jungle Effect<\/em> and found it fascinating. It\u2019s part anthropological study, part cookbook that looks at certain disease \u201ccold spots\u201d\u00a0around the world\u2014Iceland, for example, has almost no cases of depression\u2014and why those spots are different from their neighbors. The answer, she claims, is in the indigenous foods; a case study for \u201cyou are what you eat.\u201d \u2014<strong>Janet Thielke <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hilobrow.com\/2011\/02\/22\/kirb-your-enthusiasm-3\/\">Gary Panter on Jack Kirby<\/a>. Reading bliss. \u2014<strong>N.
