And how can we be authentic but also companionable in an acceptable key?<\/em> \u2014Jane Merrill<\/p>\n<p>First of all, felicitations and lots of luck. I think living with somebody, <em>\u00e0 la longue<\/em>, is pretty tricky no matter what he or she does for a living. So they tell me. The downside of writers, I gather, is that they spend all day alone (which makes them slightly crazy by supper time), suffer from writer\u2019s block (ditto), and by and large are not much help when it comes to paying the rent. But many of you are such good company! And you ask such good questions! If you discover the golden mean of authenticity and companionability, I hope and trust you will let us know. (Maybe in your next book?)<\/p>\n<p><em>Last year, I first read of Houellebecq in <\/em>The Paris Review<em>, whose <\/em>Whatever<em> and <\/em>The Elementary Particles<em> I loved. Currently, I\u2019m enjoying Le Tellier\u2019s <\/em>Enough About Love<em>. Can you recommend more contemporary French fiction in English translation? Also, is there a time line for an English translation of Houellebecq\u2019s latest?<\/em> \u2014Peter S., Saint Paul, MN<\/p>\n<p><em>I treasure Houellebecq, but I\u2019m having trouble finding a critical opinion, in English or in French, that can really explain and defend the merit of the work. Any suggestions, links? Who are the best French critics nowadays?<\/em> \u2014Alex<\/p>\n<p>Peter S., the latest issue of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dalkeyarchive.com\/reviews\/RCF\/\">The Review of Contemporary Ficton<\/a><\/em> is devoted to the publisher P.O.L.\u2014source of much that is new and original in French letters today. I think it will interest you. One P.O.L. author, \u00c9douard Lev\u00e9, appears in <a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/02\/09\/a-year-of-bolano-announcing-our-spring-issue\/\">our spring issue<\/a>. (You will recognize him as the real-life source for the character Hugues L\u00e9ger in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.otherpress.com\/books\/book?ean=9781590513996\">Enough About Love<\/a><\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>According to Houellebecq\u2019s American publisher, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Carte-Territoire-French-Michel-Houellebecq\/dp\/2081246333\/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_6\">The Map and the Territory<\/a><\/em> is scheduled to appear in spring 2012.
