And then you should see the expression on the faces of the camels crossing the desert! That is when I understand the real meaning of the word\u00a0<em>bewilderment<\/em>! But even without snow, it is bitterly cold in winter, a savage place at dawn, when stormy winds seem determined to sweep away the whole town into the desert.\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/4918\/the-winter-gerard-kornelis-van-het-reve\" target=\"_blank\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u201cThe Winter,\u201d by\u00a0Gerard Kornelis van het Reve<\/span><br \/>\n<\/b><\/a><\/span><em><span class=\"s2\">Issue no. 14 (Autumn 1956)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">The winter had set in earlier than usual. It was the beginning of November and already wet snow was scudding about, driven along by a storm. Sometimes it seemed as though the wind, rising after a breathing space, would smash the row of low houses and scatter their remains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">Henry stood in the narrow bay window of the front room and stared into the flying snow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI know the soft wood\u2019s growing,\u201d he said to himself. \u201cBut it has to be put where it\u2019s safe. I\u2019ll have to find a safe place and plant it there if the storms go on.
