Here are excerpts from her sketchbook.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_119669\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/rosa039.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119669\" class=\"size-large wp-image-119669\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/rosa039-1024x777.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"777\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/rosa039-1024x777.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/rosa039-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/rosa039-768x583.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-119669\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9Molly Crabapple<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-p1\"><span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-s1\">Rosa <\/span><span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-s2\">Col\u00f3n sat in the back room of El Local, a San Juan punk club whose walls crawled with hallucinogenic murals and whose main room had now been repurposed as a <i>comedor social, <\/i>or \u201ccollective kitchen.\u201d<span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>El Local was Rosa\u2019s place<i>.<span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i>For the past decade, she\u2019d been a pillar of Puerto Rico\u2019s indie comics scene.<span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>She drew comics, self-publishing her work through an imprint, Soda Pop Comics, that she ran with her partner, Carla. She made anthologies, organized art shows, and threw a yearly indie comic con to bring more attention to local art.<span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As we lounged on El Local\u2019s threadbare armchairs, a procession of tattooed young people in razor-altered black clothes shouted greetings in her direction.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-p3\"><span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-s2\">In the days after Maria, Rosa threw herself into comics.<span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Though she lacked water for a month, and power for seventy days, she began a series on life and politics in post-hurricane Puerto Rico.<span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>With clean lines, she drew piece after piece about independence, colonialism, and local political skulduggery. They were clear, informative, and deeply felt works of journalism, which she then published on <i><a href=\"https:\/\/thenib.com\/rosa-colon\" target=\"_blank\">The Nib<\/a><\/i><i>.<span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Her only source of electricity<span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>was a generator at Carla\u2019s parents\u2019 apartment.<span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>After working extra hours at her day job, she drew comics on her iPad, in the dark, swatting away the moths attracted by the light of the screen. Rosa told me, \u201cIt was really demoralizing, a heavy mix of depression and survival\u2019s guilt.\u201d<span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-p3\"><span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-s2\">\u201cBefore Hurricane Mar\u00eda it was kind of hard to be an artist in Puerto Rico and now it\u2019s almost impossible,\u201d she continued.<span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201cOur art scene thrived on \u2018underground\u2019 cultural spaces and galleries willing to give a chance on nontraditional art. Now those spaces are closed, inaccessible or like El Local, repurposed for worthier causes. I have no doubt these spaces will be open once more, but it might be too late. Most of the artists I know have day jobs that were affected by the lack of electricity. In Puerto Rico, like most places, I imagine, you don&#8217;t live off your art. Without work and without prospects, the artists have moved to the U.S. in droves. That means I have fewer people\u00a0to collaborate with and almost no artists to participate in next year\u2019s convention. Up-and-coming creatives won\u2019t have local artists to look up to or be mentored by. Even as I plan new projects, my collaborators are moving or making plans to move.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-p4\"><span class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-s3\">\u201cOn the other hand,\u201d\u00a0she continued, \u201cthis massive migration can be beneficial to Puerto Rico\u2019s art scene, which has been ignored for too long. The diaspora can shed light on the island by participating in more events and being vocal about where they came from and how it shaped their art.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"m_5931082823389689781gmail-p4\"><em>Molly Crabapple is an artist and author of the memoir <\/em>Drawing Blood<em>.
