Raspy, easygoing voice with a smile and sex in it, you know what I mean. How is it that we read people by their voices anyway? The phone-company information lady is officious and patronizing and she isn\u2019t even a real person. And the guy at the cable company who says our business means a lot to them and they want to please us, you can hear the sneer in his tone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/6963\/sweet-heart-eileen-myles\" target=\"_blank\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u201cSweet Heart,\u201d by Eileen Myles<\/span><br \/>\n<\/b><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><em>Issue no. 221 (Summer 2017)<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Fresca\u2019s got a new look<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">but I\u2019m not drinking<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">that. My coke<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">struck the ice<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">and the ice<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">cube cracked.<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">I\u2019m sitting by the little<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Buddha<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">who is sitting in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">my yard. I imagine<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">you walking in<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">gasping at the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">same couch<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">the same bed<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">it\u2019s almost\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">the same<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">town but this is<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">what I meant<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">and there\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">so much pleasure,<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">difference in<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"s2\">this, that \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/fiction\/6947\/envoy-caleb-crain\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u201cEnvoy,\u201d by\u00a0Caleb Crain<\/span><\/strong><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/a><\/span><em><span class=\"s2\">Issue no. 221 (Summer 2017)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">As soon as I said I was thirty, I wondered why I had said it. \u201cThirty,\u201d said the woman I was talking to, who had a tousled gamine haircut, dyed white as only a very young woman will risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cI\u2019m not thirty, I\u2019m fifty,\u201d I confessed. \u201cI don\u2019t know why I said thirty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cYou can\u2019t be fifty, either,\u201d the woman said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">In fact, I wasn\u2019t, but it seemed right to exaggerate slightly in the other direction now. How old was she? I studied the corners of her eyes.
