They hung their hammocks between the beams of the ruined playground, lit some cigarettes, and got to work.<span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Cooze, Greg, Angie, Jerry, and Bennie had come from Charlotte, North Carolina. A decade ago, they founded Ride or Destroy, a bike club known for its tricked out cycles and death-courting stunts\u2014they refer to it as a gang, tongue half in cheek.<span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The anarchism came later.<span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>In 2016, members\u00a0took part in the anti-police-violence protests that broke out in Charlotte after police officers killed Keith\u00a0L. Scott, a forty-three-year-old black man.<span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-p1\"><span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-s1\"><span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-Apple-converted-space\">After Maria hit, the friends formed DABS, or Direct Action Bike Squad, then crowdfunded money to come to Puerto Rico in order to\u00a0distribute supplies to mountain barrios.<span class=\"m_-1609663524156553126gmail-m_-3182436006401831991gmail-m_2754814836856434137gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"m_-1609663524156553126gmail-m_-3182436006401831991gmail-m_2754814836856434137gmail-Apple-converted-space\">They first<\/span>\u00a0spent a week in Luquillo looking for work that needed doing, then, through a facebook page run by a network of Puerto Rican mutual aid centers, they found the mutual aid project started by the community in Mariana.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-p1\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_119127\" style=\"width: 817px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dabs3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119127\" class=\"size-large wp-image-119127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dabs3-807x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"807\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dabs3-807x1024.jpg 807w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dabs3-236x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dabs3-768x974.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-119127\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Greg and<\/em> Angie, 2017.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-p1\"><span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-s1\">It was a good match. Mariana\u2019s communist tradition is decades old.<span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>The community organization\u00a0<small>ARECMA<\/small>\u00a0was started by socialist anti-imperialists, and its property, La Loma, which Christine had turned into a mutual-aid center post Maria, is one of the town\u2019s three attractions. The other two are\u00a0a church and a bar where old men gamble endless games of dominos over who will buy the next round of Medallas. In the past, some Mariana residents had feuded with <small>ARECMA<\/small> because of ancient land disputes. But since the hurricane cut off all power and water from the town, the daily free meals and water provided at La Loma have been a lifeline, feeding hundreds of people a day.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_119129\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dabs4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119129\" class=\"size-large wp-image-119129\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dabs4-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dabs4-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dabs4-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dabs4-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-119129\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><small>DABS<\/small> clears branches felled by Maria<\/em>,<em>\u00a0<em> 2017<\/em><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-p1\"><small>DABS<\/small> quickly fit themselves into the life of the barrio.<span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Angie\u2014who was strawberry blonde, good with a chain saw, and had white-trash goddess tattooed across her bicep\u2014was nicknamed Blanca by the old women who ran the community kitchen. The five bikers fixed roofs, cut down half-fallen tree branches on the muddy sides of mountains, rebuilt the playground, started a vegetable garden, delivered food to people who couldn\u2019t leave their homes, and charmed the scrawny neighborhood dogs in their increasingly less-broken Spanish.<span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWe\u2019re just a bunch of crazy bike punks who now live on the side of the mountain drinking moonshine and helping old ladies and disabled people,\u201d Cooze told me, while we swigged the sticking sweet <em>ca\u00f1ita<\/em> that is one of the town\u2019s main products.<span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI\u2019ve got eight communist grandmothers here,\u201d Jerry said one night, after both of us had swallowed infinite shots of <em>ca\u00f1ita<\/em>.<span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI come from Appalachia, where people also live in the mountains and make moonshine and hate the government.\u201d The rest of the crew would leave in a few weeks, but Jerry had decided to stay.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_119128\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dabs1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119128\" class=\"wp-image-119128 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dabs1-720x1024.jpg\" width=\"720\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dabs1-720x1024.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dabs1-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/dabs1-768x1092.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-119128\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Jerry, Bennie and Angie<\/em>, 2017.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-p1\"><span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-s1\">It was nine <small>P.M.,<\/small> but with the power off and the stars infinite it felt far later.<span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>We sat outside La Loma\u2019s kitchen, in the pale light provided by the solar panels Christine had somehow received as a donation.<span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Don Luis laid out the dominos on the plastic table.<span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Greg cranked up the radio, and a bolero played slow and soft.<span class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u201cLa Loma is the revolution because its not gonna be a Marxist worker uprising smashing the state, cause the state is gonna collapse under its own weight. It\u2019s up to us as radicals to build the alternatives in the ashes, because ashes make the best fertilizer,\u201d Jerry said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"m_-4766105609932609537gmail-p1\"><em>Molly Crabapple is an artist and author of the memoir <\/em>Drawing Blood<em>.
