Save the date: The Paris Review<\/em>\u00a0will honor Joy Williams\u00a0with the\u00a0Hadada Award<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for lifetime achievement at our\u00a0annual gala,\u00a0the Spring Revel<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Williams is the author of five short-story collections, four novels, a book of essays, and a guidebook to the Florida Keys (which\u00a0Cond\u00e9 Nast Traveler<\/em>\u00a0described\u00a0as \u201cone of the best guidebooks ever written\u201d). Williams\u2019s writing first appeared in our Fall\u00a01968 issue with the short story \u201cThe Retreat<\/span><\/a>.\u201d In 1973, George Plimpton decided to published her first novel,\u00a0State of Grace<\/em>,\u00a0under the Paris Review Editions imprint; the novel\u00a0was nominated for the National Book Award when Williams was only thirty. Over the decades, the Review<\/em>\u00a0has published nine of her stories (and will publish a tenth this spring).<\/span><\/p>\n

In our Summer 2014 issue, we interviewed Williams for the\u00a0Art of Fiction<\/span><\/a>\u00a0series. Her interviewer, Paul Winner, noted that Williams\u00a0used a flip phone, typed postcards in lieu of email, had never owned a computer, and\u00a0wore\u00a0prescription sunglasses, indoors\u00a0and out, night\u00a0and day. She told him that she didn\u2019t have a TV or Internet or air-conditioning at her home in Arizona, and that\u00a0she owned\u00a0seven Smith Corona portable typewriters for writing while traveling. She is particularly noted for her writing on the environment.\u00a0<\/span>As she said, \u201cCultural diversity can never replace biodiversity, though we\u2019re being prompted to think it can. We live and spawn and want\u2014always there is this ghastly wanting\u2014and we have done irredeemable harm to so much. Perhaps the novel will die and even the short story because we\u2019ll become so damn sick of talking about ourselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

We, however,\u00a0refuse to be sick of talking about Joy Williams.\u00a0Her work has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Books Critics Circle Award for Criticism, and she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re thrilled to add the Hadada to that list: it\u2019s presented annually to a distinguished member of the writing community who has made a strong and unique contribution to literature. Last year\u2019s honoree\u00a0was Richard Howard; previous recipients are John Ashbery, Lydia Davis, Joan Didion, Paula Fox, Norman Mailer, Peter Matthiessen, George Plimpton (posthumously), Barney Rosset, Philip Roth, Norman Rush, James Salter, Frederick Seidel, Robert Silvers, and William Styron.<\/span><\/p>\n

John Waters\u2014writer, director, \u201ccounterculture demigod\u201d (the\u00a0New York Times<\/em>)\u2014will present the award.\u00a0Please join us in April<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to celebrate Williams\u2019s\u00a0extraordinary career.<\/span><\/p>\n
