W. Dunne\u2019s theory that dreams offered\u00a0not only \u201cfragments of past impressions,\u201d but also \u201ca proleptic view of an event to come.\u201d In other words, that dreams were a sort of\u00a0reverse d\u00e9j\u00e0\u00a0vu, a way of\u00a0subconsciously working through\u00a0not only the past but the future.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In this fifth installment, Nabokov wakes from an erotic dream to bloody sheets.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><u>Dec. 13, 1964 8.30 am \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/u>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a050.<\/p>\n<p>Skipped four nights<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>(Did not take down the banal dreams I had lately).<\/p>\n<p>Intensely erotic dream. Blood on sheet.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>End of dream: my sister O.,<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> strangely young and languorous. Then V. tells me I must not forget to go to the oculist. I find his street but cannot remember the house number. Am agonizingly searching in the telephone book but do not recall his name and, moreover, do not know how to dial the vague number I have in mind\u2014something ending in 492. Then stand near a window, sighing, half-seeing view, brooding over the possible consequence of incest.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 <em>This reminds the Nabokov reader\u2014but not Nabokov\u2014of a critical episode at the end of his 1941 novel, <\/em>The Real Life of Sebastian Knight,<em> with its nightmarishly urgent steeple-chase in pursuit of the narrator\u2019s half-brother: \u201cI went to the telephone. &lt; . . . &gt; I thumbed the soft greasy book, looking for Dr Starov\u2019s number &lt; . . . &gt; ah, there it was: Jasmin 61\u201393. &lt; . . . &gt; I performed some dreadful manipulations and forgot the number in the middle, and struggled again with the book, and re-dialed, and listened for a while to an ominous buzzing. &lt; . . . &gt; My nerves were on edge\u201d (<\/em>LOA<em>, 153).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Abano<\/em><a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a>.
