I am seventeen years old, and I\u2019ve wanted to be a\u00a0professional\u00a0writer since I was thirteen. I feel like I am ready to submit my work to publications like<\/em> The Paris Review<em>. But it seems like the normal age to be published these days is your\u00a0forties, and no offense to those writers, but I think when teens hear\u00a0about a young-adult novel or material of that nature,\u00a0it would be nice to also know that it was written by\u00a0an actual teen. (And I don\u2019t think we should have to go to a teen\u00a0magazine just for that.) So why is the norm so close to the forties and fifties? Is it really for the maturity of the work? If that\u2019s the case I\u00a0think I would fit in without a problem.<\/em> \u2014T<\/p>\n<p>Oh, T! I remember feeling exactly the same frustration. Unfortunately\u2014and it is unfortunate, when you\u2019re sitting there waiting for high school to end\u2014grown-ups enjoy two big advantages over teenagers, when it comes to writing: They know what it\u2019s like to be a kid\u2014and also what it\u2019s like to be older. (It is constantly surprising, how different it is to be older.) And they just have more practice writing and reading. They know which rules it\u2019s okay to break and when to break them. Nothing teaches you that but time and practice. If I were you, I wouldn\u2019t turn up my nose at the teen zines. But to answer your original question, I don\u2019t think there\u2019s any age requirement for submitting to grown-up publications. And if there is, to hell with it\u2014that\u2019s a rule you should go ahead and disregard!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>I have given myself the year-long task of shoring up the foundations of my canonical reading and have set the parameters of books written between 1830 and 1930. Please, could you recommend some out-of-the-ordinary, little-known titles from this period that you consider essential reading?<\/em> Thanks,\u00a0Orlando<\/p>\n<p>Orlando, I\u2019m stumped. That combination of ordinary,\u201d\u00a0\u201clittle-known,\u201d\u00a0and \u201cessential\u201d\u00a0has got me beat: the Venn diagram shrinks to nothingness. Or, maybe, to the countours of <a href=\" http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Cranford-Elizabeth-C-Gaskell\/dp\/1163354252\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1298051058&amp;sr=8-1\"><em>Cranford<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Grub-Street-Oxford-Worlds-Classics\/dp\/0199538298\/\"><em>New Grub Street<\/em><\/a>. But what a period you\u2019ve chosen! You have all the best novels before you.
