The <em>Shijing<\/em>, I said, is the oldest anthology of Chinese poetry. The poems date back to the Zhou dynasty, which fell apart in the year 256 <small>B.C.E.<\/small> They are not the oldest poems in the world, but they are old, <i>old<\/i>. Most of them\u2014and definitely the ones that everybody loves and quotes\u2014sound like the lyrics to folk songs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p>My paddle keen and bright<br \/>\nFlashing with silver<br \/>\nFollow the wild goose flight<br \/>\nDip, dip and swing<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Dip, dip and swing her back<br \/>\nFlashing with silver<br \/>\nSwift as the wild goose flies<br \/>\nDip, dip and swing<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<p><i>That<\/i> is not a poem from the <em>Shijing<\/em>. That is a chant the kids did, in canoes, during camping, when my friend Michael Robbins was a ten-year-old nature boy in Colorado (during the Zhou dynasty). I cite it because it is exactly, and I mean <i>exactly<\/i>, like the poems in the <em>Shijing<\/em>. Here\u2019s one. Judge for yourself:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p>That broad and spreading sweet pear,<br \/>\ndon\u2019t hew it, don\u2019t hack it\u2014<br \/>\nLord Shao camped there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>That broad and spreading sweet pear,<br \/>\ndon\u2019t hew it, don\u2019t harm it\u2014<br \/>\nLord Shao stopped there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>That broad and spreading sweet pear,<br \/>\ndon\u2019t hew it, don\u2019t fell it\u2014<br \/>\nLord Shao rested there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<p>You\u2019ve probably actually heard of the <em>Shijing<\/em>, just not under that name. In English, it is usually called <i>The Book of Odes<\/i> or <i>The Book of Songs<\/i> or <i>The Confucian Odes<\/i> or that sort of thing. I\u2019m not fond of any of those Englishings; I think it should be translated literally: <i>The Poetry Classic<\/i>. (That\u2019s what the <em>jing<\/em> in <em>Shijing<\/em> means: \u201cclassic.\u201d The <em>Yijing<\/em>, often annoyingly rendered \u201cI Ching,\u201d is the \u201cchanges classic.\u201d The <em>Daodejing<\/em> is the \u201cway-virtue classic.\u201d) (Don\u2019t try this at home, though. <em>Beijing<\/em>, for instance, is not the \u201cbei classic.\u201d The <i>jing<\/i> in <em>Beijing<\/em> is a different <i>jing<\/i>. And none of these things is pronounced <em>tching<\/em>, <em>djing<\/em>, or <em>\u017eing<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>But I didn\u2019t say any of this in class that day. I had to move quickly because I wanted to show these Texas kids one of my very favorite pieces in the <em>Shijing<\/em>: number 46 (\u201cQi\u00e1ng y\u01d2u c\u00ed \u2026 \u201d). And here\u2019s where the story gets good. I thought I knew the poem well enough to recite it from memory in English. I don\u2019t know it in Chinese. In fact, let\u2019s be clear: my Chinese is village-idiot level; I couldn\u2019t possibly recite it in Chinese. I thought I could recite it in <i>English<\/i>, though, in Burton Watson\u2019s translation, which I\u2019ve read a hundred times, and over which I\u2019ve smacked my silly lips at least ninety of those times.<\/p>\n<p>But I <i>didn\u2019t<\/i> remember the piece, brief as it is, anywhere near as well as I thought I would. I charged in with complete confidence, but found out right smartually that I was quite unable to retrieve the endings of any of the stanzas. So I just had to make it up as I went along. I had just told these kids,\u00a0Listen to <i>this<\/i>, it\u2019s soooo great! So there was no going back. Also I had told them, Okay, this isn\u2019t going to be exact. But the crazy thing is, the invented stuff that came out of my mouth \u2026 was <i>good<\/i>. The kids were impressed. Their faces brightened. They were like, Wait, what was the name of that book again?<\/p>\n<p>Because! What came out of my mouth was basically a legitimate translation of what the poem says\u2014it\u2019s just not word-for-word. In fact, part of what came out of my mouth wasn\u2019t even <em>words<\/em> &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Cheggitout. So the beauty of the thing is they never tell you what happened in the chamber. But if those walls could speak &#8230; ! You get the picture. Okay, so now here, carefully reconstructed, using archival footage and oral testimony of eyewitnesses, is what I said, whatever day that was, spring semester, 2017:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p>Thorn vine on the wall?<br \/>\nmust not be stripped.<br \/>\nWords in the chamber \u2026 ?<br \/>\nmust not be repeated.<br \/>\n\u2019Cuz what could be repeated \u2026 ?<br \/>\nUgkh.
