Set on the eve of the 1977 bread riots, in a working class Cairene neighborhood, it\u2019s essential reading for anyone who\u2019s been riveted\u2014as who has not?\u2014by the uprising in Egypt. It\u2019s also a great read, expertly translated by Elliott Colla. And if you can get your hands on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/video\/x1o3j8_el-kitkat-scene-2_shortfilms\">the film adaptation<\/a>, <em>al-Kitkat<\/em>, you\u2019re in for a treat. \u2014<strong>Robyn Creswell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/reporting\/2011\/02\/14\/110214fa_fact_fey\">every word<\/a> of Tina Fey\u2019s essay in <em>The New Yorker<\/em> this week. \u201cI know older men in comedy who can barely feed and clean themselves, and they still work. The women, though, they\u2019re all \u2018crazy.\u2019\u00a0I have a suspicion\u2014and hear me out, because this is a rough one\u2014that\u00a0the definition of \u2018crazy\u2019 in show business is a woman who keeps talking even after no one wants to fuck her anymore.<em>\u201d<\/em> \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In preparation for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2011\/02\/09\/a-year-of-bolano-announcing-our-spring-issue\/\">our forthcoming Ann Beattie interview<\/a>, I decided to check out her collection\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio?isbn=9780679739036\">What Was Mine<\/a><\/em>. Beattie is a master of the short story. I could imagine her as being much like a character in her story \u201cWindy Day at the Reservoir,\u201d writing characters and stories that \u201cdeclare their necessity, so she would not feel she was just some zookeeper, capturing them.\u201d \u2014<strong>Janet Thielke<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anne Enright\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/v33\/n04\/anne-enright\/diary\">graceful reminiscence<\/a> of her former tutor, Angela Carter, isn\u2019t just a fitting tribute to the woman Salman Rushdie once described as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/v33\/n04\/anne-enright\/diary\">the benevolent witch-queen<\/a>\u201d of English letters. It\u2019s a vicarious travelogue, a wry investigation into the significance of mirrors and a tartly candid disquisition on the firm difference between wanting to write and needing to write. Clearly somebody was paying attention in class! \u2014<strong>Jonathan Gharraie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Poetry editor Robyn Creswell\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/20\/books\/review\/Creswell-t.html\">essay<\/a> for <em>The New York Times Book Review<\/em> on the writer in Egyptian society. \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I like to imagine I\u2019m an ambitious reader, but for the <em>true<\/em> book nerd, try keeping up with the National Book Critics Circle\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bookcritics.org\/blog\/category\/31_books_in_31_days\/\">31 Books in 31 Days<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0If anything, it makes one appreciate how good criticism can be an excellent excuse not to read the book! \u2014<strong>T.
