If you\u2019re standing <em>on <\/em>the corner, you could be having the time of your life; if you\u2019re standing <em>in <\/em>the corner, you\u2019re probably not having much fun at all. The corner of a room is a site of inwardness and anxiety, a repository for social insecurities. It\u2019s also just not very exciting to look at.\u00a0For these reasons and more, as Will Wiles writes in a ranging new essay, writers as various as H. P. Lovecraft and J. G. Ballard are united in their fixation on corners, the locus of so many psychic burdens: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/placesjournal.org\/article\/the-corner-of-lovecraft-and-ballard\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lovecraft and Ballard both put architecture at the heart of their fiction, even though neither had the slightest formal training in the subject<\/a>\u00a0\u2026\u00a0They are connected, through time and space, by that most humble of architectural events: the\u00a0<em>corner,\u00a0<\/em>the junction between two walls. What Lovecraft and Ballard did was to make the corner into a place of nightmares\u2014and in doing so, they reveal its secret history \u2026 The Lovecraftian corner could drive men mad, whisk them to terrible other places, and sometimes kill them outright. And the corner of a room is a place of power\u2014uncanny, unwelcome power. \u2018That most sordid of all havens, the corner, deserves to be examined,\u2019 writes the philosopher Gaston Bachelard in\u00a0<em>The Poetics of Space<\/em>. Bachelard saw the corner as a shameful intellectual bolthole, in which we are silent and immobile, negating the universe, constructing imaginary rooms around us \u2026 In 1967 Ballard made four conceptual advertisements and placed them in the pages of the literary magazine <em>Ambit<\/em>. One asked: \u2018Does the angle between two walls have a happy ending?\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>JFK talked a big game about art\u2014\u201cI see little of more importance to the future of our country and our civilization than full recognition of the place of the artist,\u201d he said, and he seemed to believe that nurturing U.S. artists was a great way to kick Commie ass. But now that the dust has settled, Philip Kennicott writes, we should be honest\u2014the guy didn\u2019t really like art that much: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/music\/john-f-kennedy-became-a-hero-to-american-art-lovers--but-he-wasnt-one-himself\/2017\/06\/19\/68550bca-5506-11e7-b38e-35fd8e0c288f_story.html?utm_campaign=c37c35f212-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_06_19&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=Breakfast%20with%20ARTnews&amp;utm_term=.9ae2b4df16db\" target=\"_blank\">Kennedy was never an art lover, and to the extent that he respected art, it was in the same way he respected accomplishment in science and sports<\/a>. Nor was Kennedy moved by music or opera, or susceptible to the introspection offered by paintings or sculpture. He was, however, passionate about winning the Cold War on all fronts, including culture \u2026 Kennedy no doubt believed everything he said about art, at least in an abstract way. But notice the words that got cut \u2026 \u2018Art reminds us that man\u2019s hunger for beauty, and truth and self-fulfillment, knows no national boundaries.\u2019 That cut, eliminating reference to how individuals actually engage with art\u2014the hunger for deeper things and self-fulfillment\u2014is significant \u2026 He was mocked even in his own time for being more an enthusiast than a deep connoisseur. In 1965, the <em>Kenyon Review<\/em> wrote that one of his most engaging statements on the arts, an article he wrote for <em>Look Magazine<\/em>, was written \u2018in a vein better suited to a high school commencement address.\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ed Yong is here to report on the sex life of the cabbage white butterfly, whose sperm is to humans\u2019 as M&amp;Ms are to Hershey Bars: they improved a classic by adding a candy shell. Yong writes, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2017\/06\/butterfly-cabbage-white-vagina-dentata\/530889\/\" target=\"_blank\">A cabbage white\u2019s ejaculate is very different from a human\u2019s<\/a>. Rather than a blob of white gunk, it\u2019s a complex solid package called a spermatophore, which consists of a hard outer shell, soft nutritious innards, and a ball of sperm at the base. The male deposits this into a pouch within the female reproductive tract called the bursa copulatrix. Once inside, the sperm swim off into a second pouch\u2014the female will later use these to fertilize her eggs. Meanwhile, she starts to break down the outer shell of the spermatophore to absorb the nutrients within. So, the spermatophore acts as a nuptial gift\u2014a way for the male to nourish the mother of his future offspring, long after he flies away \u2026 She\u00a0<em>chews\u00a0<\/em>her way into the spermatophore using an organ called the signum, which sits inside her bursa. It looks exactly like a pair of toothed jaws, with a hinge in the middle \u2026 It takes between twenty-four and thirty-six hours of constant chewing to break into the spermatophore.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Carl Simon has been mulling over Lorde\u2019s new album, <em>Melodrama<\/em>, and the way it reflects her vision of an ideal collective listenership: \u201c<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/arts\/music_box\/2017\/06\/lorde_s_new_album_melodrama_reviewed.html\" target=\"_blank\">Melodrama\u00a0<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/arts\/music_box\/2017\/06\/lorde_s_new_album_melodrama_reviewed.html\" target=\"_blank\">contains a lot more life experience and more craft, with songs that teem with dramatic scenarios and storytelling<\/a>. But bending to the plainspoken vernacular of pop has also domesticated Lorde\u2019s vocabulary a little. To realize her dreams of Mitchell- or Cohen-esque genius, she might have to backtrack and recover a few of her former pretensions \u2026 The title\u00a0<em>Melodrama\u00a0<\/em>is partly teasing, as Lorde tells tales about her first big breakup (with a New Zealand photographer) and emotional group adventures. By turns it becomes more self-critical, as when she sings about \u2018all of the things we\u2019re taking\/ \u2019cause we are young and we\u2019re ashamed.\u2019 But she\u2019s also invoking a form, what the scholar Lauren Berlant calls a segment of \u2018women\u2019s culture\u2019\u2014though Lorde is making a case for a specific young women\u2019s variety\u2014that suggests an \u2018intimate public.\u2019 As Berlant puts it, it\u2019s \u2018a world of strangers who would be emotionally literate in each other\u2019s experience of power, intimacy, desire, and discontent, with all that entails.\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>At a new Matisse exhibition, Claire Messud meditates on the objects he used in his daily life, and the inspiration they brought him in their quotidian way: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/daily\/2017\/06\/20\/matisse-the-joy-of-things\/\" target=\"_blank\">They delighted, inspired, or confounded him, in their humble ordinariness and in all that they evoked<\/a>: a chocolate pot, a green glass vase, a pewter jug, embroidered hanging cloths (<em>haitis<\/em>)\u00a0from North Africa, masks and figurines from sub-Saharan Africa, a brazier, a marquetry coffee table, a low-slung chair \u2026 Matisse\u2019s passion for color, for light, for pattern, for flowers and the female figure; and his conviction\u2014borne out in almost every one of his paintings and sculptures, whether a sublime nude woman\u2019s torso small enough fit in the palm of your hand or an imposing complex oil painting such as <em>Interior with Egyptian Curtain\u00a0<\/em>(1948)\u2014that what endures is certainly matter:\u00a0the flesh, the fruit, the flowers, the folds of fabric.
